yanks and pies
Ello my septic pals, hope all is well. There was a program on here in Oz last night which covered an audience opening up a pie shop in the states. He was saying you lot hadn't heard of pies and had to be educated in the art of eating them without cutlery. Is this actually true or are my aussie
countrymen bullshitting and trying to make out we're a totally unique race???

Pies are odd here. Some even say that pizza is a pie. Generally a pie is sweet. Savory pies seem to be needed to be called "pot pies" often they are top crust only anyway. Aussie pies are a brand here, and to an extent, proper pies are associated with Australia. There is an Aussie pie shop near me.

Blimp, I thought it was just the aussies doing their 'we're special' thing. I'd have thought the British influence from years back would've cemented the pie into your culture, but this isn't the first time I've been wrong haha

I think it might be regional.
There are quite a few pie type shops in and around my area, from the Brit type stores to the Brazilian ones.
They're a bit different though.

No meat pies here.
Americans seen to have collective paranoia about offal, and there is considerable suspicion that loomeat that isn't obviously "meat" i.e. clear chunks might contain "parts". The only pies I recall seeing frozen or in cafeterias is the "chicken pot pie", which includes vegetables and a creamy sauce.
Mrs P made a great steak and ale pie a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't find any kidneys to put in it, but it doesn't matter because Mrs P wouldn't have put them in the pie; she's a born USC herself, and won't touch "parts".
I would just about kill for a pork pie.

I am from So. California and it's all Spanish influence there, not sure if the British ever had any real significant influence on the place.

Re: yanks and pies
We have a restaurant called a House of pies here, but it's not pies like I know from back home..they are all incredibly sweet, and none of them actually have a crust on top...normally just lashings of "cream". They also sell "pie irons" in the outdoor type shops, but these are more for cooking a toastie over a campfire than what we know as a pie.
We have an Aussie family not far away who take the "we're special" bit to the extreme. The eldest son (16-ish) keeps banging on about how Aussies are the only ones that can cook pies, even though he's only ever been to Oz, NZ, Mexico and the U.S. It's not dissimilar to the Brit attitude that no one else can do fish n chips properly. Except he's wrong, and we're not

Yes, we got an angus rib roast from a butcher for Christmas, but I'd have to get busy in the kitchen myself because Mrs P wouldn't make a pie with kidneys in it.

Pies invented by Egypt and adopted by Greeks and carried to Britain by the Romans
