WTF in America

[2] This is a public forum, and neither you nor I get to determine what gets posted, as long as posts are civil.
[3] If you don't expect people to reply to your posts, sometimes with questions, and sometimes with contrary opinions, I am not sure why you would post on a public forum.
As you said, have a nice day!

Re: WTF in America
Compare the gun death rates of the UK to the US. You also have to bear in mind that the cultures are completely different, as are the histories, so banning almost all gun ownership in the UK was a far different proposition to doing the same in the US.

That wasn't so hard, now was it?

Re: WTF in America
... Won't happen of course, not any time soon. ....
The war on drugs has, by almost any measure, failed, and the only ones who appear to be benefitting are the ones who are still fighting it.
..... Another place to start is with alleviating social and economic deprivation. The kids running the county lines in the UK aren't the ones doing well at school and going home to a comfortable family life..... People will make money illegally if they cannot find or hope for a legal future for themselves that will allow them to do well.

Agreed.
Also with this.
The war on drugs has, by almost any measure, failed, and the only ones who appear to be benefitting are the ones who are still fighting it.
Agreed. Applying only sticks isn't going to work. Carrots are also necessary, but that isn't a story that the hard line law and order lobby want to hear.

Who are you, and what have you done with Pulaski?
But yes, complex situations require multi-faceted solutions, and in particular political will.

Don't look in the box!
Today we went shopping for records, in a record shop, which is an experience I never thought I would get to enjoy with my daughter, as until recently that ship seemed to have sailed at least 25 years ago.
Little Miss P's tastes might not fully overlap with mine, though she did express regret over lunch after learning that she would never get to see "Turn the Page" played live, as Bob Seger stopped touring three years ago. The moral of the tale being "don't turn down an offer from Dad to take you to a concert, as you might regret it later".
Coincidentally, I saw Bob Seger for the first time on his farewell tour, but it was the support band, Grand Funk Railroad, that tipped the balance and persuaded me to buy a ticket.
.... Little Miss P must be softening you up.

Re: WTF in America
I don't disagree with any of your post, but the current situation is a lot more complicated now that most US states have legalized marijuana on some level, and several, including most notably California, have legalized it for recreational use. The problem is in those states marijuana has switched from being a prohibition & supply issue to being a tax fraud racketeering issue, where criminals are willing to supply un-taxed marijuana* for less than it would cost to buy legal weed.
In California, this problem is exacerbated by the permitting process, which requires a legal dispensary to be approved by the municipality in which it will operate, and something like two thirds of municipalities in California are refusing to approve permits for any dispensaries, so for all intents and purposes, legally approved, taxed marijuana is unavailable.
For context, trafficking of cigarettes remains an issue in the US, primarily the transport of cigarettes from Native American reservations where the tax is low, for illegal sale in markets far from a reservation.
* IIRC in the spring of 2022 an illegal marijuana farm and processing center in California was raided and over $2bn, yes billion, of untaxed contraband marijuana was seized.

I would note, as a casual 'recreational' user, the price of totally legal marijuana is not bad at all; it may be more than illegal marijuana, but I was shocked at how cheap, and long-lasting, a legal purchase was. And by buying legally, you are guaranteeing a quality product free of pesticides, and with well-defined ingredients.
=========================
I agree the situation in the US in regards to marijuana in general is not great. However, it seems the US is far ahead of most other countries in the world, at least on paper. At least medical marijuana is now legal in a majority of states - more than can be said for most of the world. And consider 'CBD' (CBD is a component of marijuana that has various benefits and does not produce a 'high'). CBD is available 'everywhere' these days, in the US. I saw on a 'travel' forum recently about the legality of possessing "CBD" in various world locations - it's virtually impossible to acquire CBD legally anywhere (outside the US), and possession of it can land you in jail, big-time, in most European countries - Is CBD Legal Worldwide? I read the other day that sales of vinyl have overtaken sales of cds Records are back, even if they have things like Taylor Swift on them.
As for Mr. Seger - well, roll me away.
