WTF in America

Re: WTF in America
A dollar an hour???????? Holy ****!!!! My first job over here (which I’ve tried to block from my memory) was running the security department at a beach resort in Santa Cruz. I was asked a few times during my interview what I thought about my guards being armed. The question came up enough times for me to stop the interview to clarify I wouldn’t be armed, and if I or anyone else was, the interview was over as I wasn’t interested. Turns out the guards wanted to be armed so they didn’t want a manager in fighting for the right to be armed. Being in California, I had to be licensed. The exam drummed into you that you were there to observe and report, not get stuck in. So it leads to the question, why are security guards armed, after all, if they are giving you a gun, surely, you are expected to use it should the need arise. Scary thought.

The training in California was pretty easy when I did it, but its been like a decade and some change now. I didn't last long with an actual security company though, the pay was low, the job was way too boring, and I got hired as security at a Marriott so went there instead, better pay, benefits, and work environment. Much rather walk around a hotel, and such than stand outside in the middle of the night at some random strip mall...
Only maybe 10% of the security job at the Marriott actually involved anything security related, most of the night was just chatting with the front desk, valet or walking around, it was the overnight shift so was pretty quiet and being a business oriented hotel, our rates were typically too high for the weekend party animals.
There were a couple events though, one guy tried to kill his girlfriend, pure chance we even knew about it, I just happened to be walking past the room and heard her screams for help.
Bachelorette parties, must have a book on pranks to play on hotel staff because almost all did the same pranks, call and ask for a pillow, answer the door topless, it was so common I could almost predict when it was going to happen....
But yeah anything serious we just called the police, and the only time were intervened ourself was with the guy trying to kill his girlfriend, but I had a 300 pound linebacker type as my backup, so he took the guy down and held him til the police arrived.

jumpers. We did have a guy hang himself from one of the first floor balconies. I was first in scene. Having to cut him down and perform CPR was gnarly!!! Seeing him hanging there in the gloom will be etched on my memory forever. Just one of the many reasons why that job was by far the worst of my life. There were a few what have I done moving over here moments during those 2 years!

Yeah, most of my job was mundane crap, dealing with noise complaints or booting out pool

I got lucky with the Marriott, it was a pretty easy going property, helped that Residence Inn by Marriott is business oriented longer term stays, so not a lot of weekend parties but we still did get some, just not as bad as the typical downtown hotel did.
People I worked with were good, and the assistant manager was super to work with, never met the GM though, since I worked graveyard and GM never was there that late.
2nd highest paying job I have ever had too, $14/hr in 2010, min wage was like $8/hr back then so a fair bit over min wage, but still wasn't enough to rent an apartment.

I wonder if we can expect one, or both, of the two ladies in question to post a screen shot of a credit card payment with the tag line 'just an experiment to see if we could get money out of a politician'?

I don't know if this is unique to the US, but cattle eating candy seems to be a thing farmers do.

From the look of it, a huge bomb in an RV trashed one, maybe two city blocks, it's flagged as probably a terrorist attack, and nobody thinks it's worth mentioning?
"Authorities were on their way to the scene of a report of a suspicious vehicle when the explosion occurred about 6:30 a.m. on Friday, sending shattered glass and debris over a wide area and rocking nearby buildings."
They even got Hooters, where's the outrage?

Usually the types that do this have a target, and don't broadcast a warning of the impending event, wonder what the motive was or the target. Weird situation.

Possible someone was killed in the bombing in Nashville, they believe they found human tissue, but wont know until lab confirms.
Law enforcement wasn't aware of any credible threat to Nashville, and they didn't pick up any chatter from extremist groups.
AT&T service is disrupted due to damage to their network.
