No, that wouldn’t fly up here in the North Country. Just twenty-five miles from Canada - passive aggressive, old fashioned courtesy is the norm around here. I assume he would allow them to take the toilets away, then replace them with new ones.

I had no idea the toilets were so famous. (Small town - I know the person who wrote that piece.)

This seems to fit here, it's WTF and it's America. At risk of mixing metaphors, definitely a bit of the pot calling the kettle black going on.

And now we've outgunned the 1st amendment with the 2nd amendment we now have the armed to the teeth pot and the armed to teeth kettle, can't imagine it being too long before both pot and kettle spring holes...

Trader Joe's is now pushing back on the 'name change' initiative. Good for them.

For those not familiar with the issue, Trader Joe's Italian Pizza is branded as "Trader Giotti's". Trader Joe's Mexican foods are labeled as "Trader Jose's". Trader Joe's Chinese foods are labeled as 'Trader Ming's" ... and so on. Recently some stupid kid started an online petition suggesting that these labels are racist. Initially, TJ's sounded like it was going to cave in but I just saw an article where they are defending their product names.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...l-names-rcna63

The petition posted on change.org by a high school student claims the names create “a narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes.”

On what planet is "Trader Jose's" racist ...? What is 'exotic' about "Trader Jose's"?

There's now a counter-petition on Change.org ...

I completely agree with you and find this narrative total bs. However, when I read the original story, I thought I understood TJ’s response was that they’d already largely eliminated these jocular “foreign” brand-names, and it was just some older stock on the shelves that they needed to sell ... ?

On a similar vein, though, I do find some of this dumbed-down exoticism cringe-inducing. For instance, Chinese restaurants that have their name in English, but in vaguely “Chinese looking” characters. Same with some Jewish themed businesses, with the name written in Hebrew-looking characters.

I agree, and if find something cringe-inducing or otherwise annoying I just take my business elsewhere. If the business thinks it's name, font, or marketing materials attract business then it doesn't worry me, even if it has the opposite effect on me.

Next time you're in Portsmouth, check out the Woks Wong [sic] restaurant. Chinese takeaway and fish and chips.

Ok...Now you're just looking for stuff to get upset about. My wife does that sometimes, talkin about everything that is wrong around her and the problems of day... When she gets in that mood and reels off 10 negative things in a row, I always say "yeah, but it's a beautiful day" and she knows that's code for STFU.

Pouring with rain here. And I see the sun’s starting to poke through, so by the afternoon it’ll be 85 degrees and humid. Mosquitoes and deer flies will be wicked.

But to answer your point, I’m NOT one of those people who looks for things to get upset about.

If the food looks good, I’ll give it a try. I like the look of that Woks Wong. Especially the menu items that include lots of chips.

My wife is like you sometimes.... She has a 2 degree comfort range...She's way too hot at 70 degree's and way too cold at 67 and she'll let everyone around her know about her discomfort- Some days it's either too wet or too dry, too sunny or too cloudy, too windy or there is no breeze at all...It's never just right... I noticed that a lot of peoples entire personality consists of a series of complaints and those people usually end up alone- My wife is a happy songbird 85% of the time, but that other 15% really sucks... I just try to avoid being alone with her in a car during those times..

And why don't you wait until the mosquitoes and deer flies to actually become wicked before you complain about them? Your husband will appreciate me asking you that question-

.
