Let's face it, the only people on a plane who have a 'cool' job are the pilots

Maybe they should announce everyone that boards ... you know, in case they have "cool" job too.

Baffling.
Couldn't agree more.

At least announcing one of those is on board makes some sense and might be worth some applause.

I thought that military people always got on the plane first, so they are already seated by the time us in cattle class squeeze into the seats and struggle to find any space at all in the overhead compartments.

Baffling.
I also agree.

Re the comment that perhaps it's because they weren't drafted - shouldn't people who defend their country regardless of what their primary choices in life are more worthy to be cheered? i.e. the people that get drafted? This is not a rhetorical question.

People who make good choices or exemplary behaviour generally get acknowledged and rewarded (not necessarily financially). Merely doing as you're told is not remarkable or special. I am thankful for the conscripts in WWI and WWII for their efforts, but I have more admiration for those who have volunteered and put their lives on the line since conscription ended. I do not mean to endorse every war since Vietnam, because once signed up you have no choice in which battles you fight.

Lives on the line?

I remember reading that a grunt from say LA had a better life expectancy being in the Army and deployed in Iraq than their buddy who stayed behind.

And what percentage of the armed forces is deployed to anywhere dangerous?

I assumed it was some sort of weird reaction to Vietnam.

I watched the Football this afternoon, pretty awesome game, but one thing I have noticed is that US Supporters do not seem to get behind their teams when they are losing very well.

So why the exception for the Armed Forces?

I know it’s a little weird having mattresses as a way to raise funds. What does anybody do with them? I mean .. how many mattresses do you need in the house?
