Roads in NY State and NJ are very bad too. I drive only from time to time, so each time it's noteabale for me. I am always amazed at how come US taxpayers can accept the state of the roads PLUS pay tolls on most roads. If there were no tolls, maybe it would be another matter.

The stretch of the 101 near us is crap - when I first arrived, I assumed they would be along shortly to put the tarmac on, but 9 years later still waiting.

How do they get away with that plus charging road tolls? This is a genuine question.

You appear to be labouring under the mistaken belief that there is some connection between taxing someone to drive on a stretch of road and the money applied to maintain the road.

Why is there no connection? I thought that it is specifically for that purpose. To maintain that stretch of road. Or at least, it should be. Taxes are supposed to be to give back to the community by providing community services. No?

Yeah, OK, OK. I get the gist. But in a country like the US where taxes and businesses have a huge impact on government policy (at least that's my perception, compared to the UK which has more of a socialist leaning) - so I don't recall having to pay road tolls in the UK and the roads are generally good, but here, almost every damn bridge costs $s, the Lincoln tunnel is $10 if I recall right - so considerable sums of money. How come citizens aren't yelling out?

Oh, never mind

The gridlock in LA must be costing businesses a fortune.

I think the tendency here is to say, "It is what it is" and put up with things.

What are these "tolls" of which you speak?

You live in the wrong part of the country. I haven't paid a toll since I last drove on the interstate in Maryland, and I learned of a detour around one of those anyway!

They're everywhere in NY and NJ. There's even an electronic system whereby you can have something installed in your car and the toll reader automatically deducts the toll $ amount from your balance on its chip, so you don't have to roll down your window and physically pay.

I know, I used to live in Westchester (Valhalla), and that is one of several reasons why I don't live there now. $1,000/mth property tax is another! And shïtty houses in less than great areas that I could barely afford.
