It's "WTF Democracy in America"!!
Big time.

4) Voting....the penalty being you've just inadvertently signed up for jury duty

5) American flag lapel pins / Old Glory hanging from front yard flag poles.

6) Rise of Fox News

7) Sad decline of CNN

8) TV prescription ads with their dire warnings of potential, scary, disgusting side effects - particularly "WTF" when broadcast whilst eating dinner in front of telly. (well, who does that? )

9) Local news weathermen in front of kaleidoscopic radar maps, in too-tight suits,
gesticulating and doing wild bodily contortions - all of which becomes so hypnotically mesmerizing that when the shock and awe is over - WTF - you can't remember if you've been warned whether or not a blizzard is fast approaching

10) Bumper stickers proclaiming the superiority of the driver's super achiever offspring

11)Fire Sales

Who TF knows? Need an editor, I guess. But here we go (and thanks!):
The WTFs that got left behind.....

13) Current tear-down of prior tear-down, destined to be torn down yet again, 5 years from now
aka: The Real Estate Market - in America
aka: Flipping and flopping

14) Ever escalating cost of a first class stamp (I know, I know - but sometimes snail mail is mandatory, no ifs ands or buts....no faxes or emails either)

15) Instant "gardens" ("designed" by interior decorators) composed of colour splash "annuals" - planted then ripped up and out every few months (well not really planted - no time for roots to root), interspersed with yew topiary, coaxed, shaped and manipulated into growths arising from the ground which resemble shaved and shorn Standard Poodles.
This is probably more characteristic of a WTF in Beverly Hills

That is mostly a list of peeves, and mostly things that are well known to people who don't live in the US. When I started this thread I was more looking for genuine surprises and oddball things that are not irritations. We have a pet peeves thread, and a "You've been here too long when.... " thread, that cover most of the things on your list.

Not at all, I am arguably one of the worst for taking things off topic. I was just trying to bring this thread back on topic.

Indeed. The effort that most American women put into their hair. ..... I only became aware 2-3 years ago of the huge investment in time and money that black women put into their hair. I hear that it is not unusual for women of relatively modest means to spend $5,000 - $10,000 a year on hair care, weaves, and wigs.

Somewhat. It is certainly a status symbol in the black community for women to have styled hair. The problem they have is that typically their hair is completely impossible to style, at least into styles that women of other races have. So the answers are either extremely time consuming mini plaits or "corn rows", the application of some very aggressive chemical "relaxers", and/or the very time consuming addition of "weaves", which can also be very expansive for a good quality natural hair weave.

The ultimate answer is sometimes just a wig, which again can be extremely expensive for the best quality ones. The irony is that unlike most wig buyers who have lost some or all of their hair due to old age or medical treatments e.g. chemotherapy, the goal is to have a wig that does not look like their natural hair.
