WTF in America

Re: WTF in America
How is this possible?
"Almost two-thirds of young American adults do not know that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and more than one in 10 believe Jews caused the Holocaust, a new survey has found, revealing shocking levels of ignorance about the greatest crime of the 20th century. According to the study of millennial and Gen Z adults aged between 18 and 39, almost half (48%) could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto established during the second world war. Almost a quarter of respondents (23%) said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, or had been exaggerated, or they weren’t sure. One in eight (12%) said they had definitely not heard, or didn’t think they had heard, about the Holocaust..."
Great chunks of history missing. Makes you wonder what else is.

Re: WTF in America
In my school district HS World History is limited, more or less limited to the revolutionary periods (French Revolution/Haiti/Russia) and the Holocaust, which is backed up in Literature by, often reading "Night".or similar.
My kids district had a survivor come and talk to the seventh grade.

Re: WTF in America
A small aside, the subtext of the revolutionary periods is that revolutions don't work, individuals who are looked at elsewhere are often Gandi and MLK, individuals who promoted peaceful change.
I always am a bit baffled by this transparency of fear by the middle classes of violent change in a country born of revolution with blood that gets promoted non stop.

I know it happened, I can name 1 concentration camp off the top of my head, I know the Jewish people are not to blame for it and some other basic stuff I picked up over the years, but history was very limited subject during my school years, I can't say I learned a whole lot in school in regards to history, documentaries on TV is where most of my history knowledge comes from.
Not surprised to see those stats to be honest.

Its probably another reflection of our fragmented and polarized society that the shared culture is not so shared any more..

I wasn't given the best teachers either, those of us who scored low on standardized tests may have well been in a different school, we were certainly not getting the same education.

Re: WTF in America
We are in an age where groups want you to doubt every fact, even those long established by science, while no evidence can convince you against the things you feel are true. You ask people what evidence they would need to see to convince them of climate change, if there is one thing that they need to have revealed to them that they haven't yet seen, they say that they don't know. At the same time, all they need to believe in Trump fighting underground pedo blood cults is a webpage by someone they don't know, that has already been proven untrue countless times before.
Facts don't matter anymore, they don't work on people who don't want to change their mind.

The only thing we covered in History class was "Crop Rotation in the Middle Ages" Four effin years of it. I even remember the course title.
I mean, it's kinda hard to miss knowing stuff.. reading is good(tm) (or maybe growing up in the UK in the 70s just gave me more exposure to things in general than here), but History class was not where it happened.

Ideally school is for gaining (transferable) skills, not knowledge.
Though we have seen in another thread that some still seem to think it should be didactic.
