Believe it or not I received a couple of nice smiles from a mother and her teenage daughter as I was crossing the parking lot to the car after shopping at a food outlet this afternoon.. Since I was wearing shorts I'm sure that it was not because of my legs as some of the jealous crowd have sneeringly stated that they've seen better legs in a box of Kentucky Fried. But yeah it's clear you're completely out of touch. Thanks to the blessings of Viagra many old geezers like myself have taken to chasing the missus around the kitchen table instead of toddling off to our afternoon domino games at the senior center

I'm in Thailand, the Land of Smiles, and people here just smile at you for no reason at all. Nothing to do with gender, appearance, wealth, they're just friendly. Come to think of it, that seems to happen in every country I've visited. There should be a law against it, people smiling just for the sake of being friendly.

The creepy old Westerner blokes with young Thai women are another story, they don't smile at anyone, they just sit opposite each other glued to their individual mobile phones, no conversation at all. I quite enjoy striking up a conversation with these blokes and telling them how nice they are to take their granddaughter on holiday

I don't consider myself to be particularly ageist or sexist, but ... I really do think there is such a thing as 'TMI' - 'too much information' when it comes to body covering. I do understand that, in the hot and steamy south, one tends to want to reduce body covering ...

I went to Thailand back in 1981. The attitude of the people was wonderful back then. Glad to see it's still the same. I put it down to their Buddhist religion. Whatever it is, we could all learn something from them. Actually, and I'm sure this will be contentious, I felt somewhat similar when I first came to the US on vacation in 1980 - not necessarily the 'land of smiles', but the general optimism / positive attitude was very noticeable compared to UK. I visited the US again in 1983 on a temporary work assignment, and absolutely loved the work environment; it was then that I decided to get a job in the US ... I flew to CA and got myself a job in 4-5 days (had to return for 6 months until the visa came through).
