Re: WTF in America
I was a real bright ginger as a child, and the local GP was also ginger haired, neither of my parents were, a 'friend' of my mother did make some comment about my parentage, my mother didn't speak to her for several years after that.
It transpired that my grandfather, who died before I was born was also ginger haired

My great grandfather who died in the 1970's had red hair, so suppose that is where it came from.
All my sisters kids are blonde like her.

Re: WTF in America
Everyone in my family has brown hair, except a cousin who had red hair, but his mum is Irish so we all assumed it was from her. My sister has two redheaded kids, but no redheads on her husband's side either.

Same here. No living person from my birth up to this date have red hair except me, well its more of a reddish blonde now, but was bright red as a child into my early 20's.

Two year old child falls into Cheetah enclosure at Cleveland, OH zoo.
The parents appear to have been having a Michael Jackson moment, dangling the child over the barrier. The local police are pursuing a prosecution of the parents for child endangerment. Maybe the corner has been turned in the attitude towards such idiotic behaviour by parents .... or maybe not.

And because there isn't really a over draft system here, so folks who do live pay cheque to pay cheque that don't have a job straight off, the money covers the bills and don't have anything for food etc, so get a loan on the next pay cheque, whilst in the UK, you'd just have a over draft.
Democrats overall oppose "payday loans" in the belief that it just makes a bad situation worse since most can't manage money and as soon as they get money it burns a hole in their pocket and therefore can't meet the loan payment and typically just make the interest payment or default. In other words, many see "payday loans" as just another "money tree" for immediate gratification just like they looked at "overdraft protection" without concern as to how they would pay it off in the future.
Republicans overall support "payday loans" since with a high enough interest rate, businesses can make money even with all the defaults and the consumer has the "choice" of putting himself further in debt.

That is completely wrong. The overdraft system or bounced checks caused the vast majority of people that get "payday" loans to lose checking privileges due to non payment of the overdraft or bounced checks and are reported to ChexSystems and therefore can't have a checking account.

In my opinion, not being able to manage money is an addiction just like any other addiction. Feeding the addiction only prolongs the addiction and makes things worse.
I know a person that won a lawsuit for $150,000 in the '80s and the money was gone in 18 months and he ended up with no assets. Since then he had an inheritance but also blew that very quickly. He's normally had low paying jobs but also had one good paying job but he still lived paycheck to paycheck. He is always looking for that "money tree" such as bank accounts that he overdrafts and doesn't pay off, mobile phone services that will extend him credit that he defaults on, credit cards that he defaults on, and overpriced car dealers that will give him credit but the car is eventually repossessed. I suspect he also did "payday loans" that he defaulted on.
Another person, age 27, worked for me making a good salary in the '80 went bankrupt with about $40,000 of credit card debt and a condo that he couldn't meet the payments. Shortly after the debt was discharged, we were in Washington DC for a show and he said he had to fly to NYC for the day to see "Cats" on Broadway. How he was going to eat for the next two weeks, I doubt ever entered his mind.

Re: WTF in America
I turn bank overdraft down. I don't write cheques anyhow, and I have a credit card for an emergency situation, well small emergencies but a pay day loan won't help with a major one either....
I did use a payday loan place in the past, but only because rent was due, and I had just started a new job and well takes a few weeks to get paid the first time.
I would never make it a regular thing.
Here they changed payday loan rules a bit, the loan place has to permit 3 equal payments vs the one large payment on pay day that generally sent people back into another loan.
There is also a limit on how much they can give in a loan, its capped at a certain % of the customers pay.
Interest and fees is also capped at 23% total.

Re: WTF in America
You are missing the British context of Bob's comment about overdrafts in the UK. If you look after your account the banks will "reward" you with an overdraft limit. I had had one, for about £1,200 IIRC, or it might have been even more. The interest rate was about 5%, so it was hard for me to pay more than £1 in interest. It just meant at the end of the month that there was some flexibility to pay bills, and not get skewered with a $35 "insufficient funds" fee.
Most bills take credit cards in North America, so easier and cheaper to use the credit card if there isn't sufficient funds in the bank account.
Seem's the service in UK banks is more of a service to rewards good customers vs being another form of credit to get the bank as much money as possible.

Man hits child who ran into street. Stayed at scene and is then shot along with a 15 year old who died at hospital.
Milwaukee driver hits and kills toddler, and is then shot to death - World - CBC News
No suspects in custody. I can't recall if this was in a bad area of Milwaukee or not, but doesn't surprised me considering how bad some of the area's can be there.
