Weird thing around here is that it's the churches that do the Halloween events. Sure, there are hay bales but it's only on October 31st... and of course the kids are dressed up as ghouls and witches and minions (?).

Can't beat a few of Steinman's songs sung by him... oh wait, the mechanically extracted pink slime crap? Oh yeah. Ugh.

Last month we went to a food court kind of place that advertised a "Philly cheese steak with sliced beef and [whatever]". Woman took a minced beef patty out of the freezer and chopped it up. Not impressed with the menu compared to reality. I suppose I ought to be thankful it was a slice of plastic rather than liquid yellow stuff out of a bottle masquerading as a vaguely cheese-like product.

I just think if you want sliced beef/turkey it should be a steak or a slice from roast beef/turkey. NOT grind it then put it together, put sauce on top and then slice it. This is assuming that real meat is used.

Geoff I've had that experience and wondered whether it was a science experiment.

Isn't 'meatloaf' like 'sausages' - it's whatever you want to put in it, from bland to spicy, beef to chicken, nasty waste product to ground-up quality meats ...? I see meatloaf on the menu in decent restaurants.

It's like a big, sliceable burger, yeah.

I like it, myself, but then I never really was a fuss eater

Me too. It also doubles as a great Ketchup carrier.

Meatloaf I like; it is just ground beef with what ever you want in it like onions, peppers etc, shaped like a loaf.

I hate the 'ham' here. I honestly cannot find decent ham. It doesn't matter how much I pay, it is all

What form of ham are you looking for? Presumably not a prosciutto / Parma type (Italian cured ham), or Spanish equivalent. Are you talking about the big 'Thanksgiving' type hams, typified here in the US by 'honeybaked' ? Or are you talking about a 'gammon steak' type slice of ham?

My mum was here recently and was craving a 'gammon' steak; I found one she liked at Sprouts (common in AZ); I think it was from a 'fancy' supplier, like Niman Ranch or similar (one of those low-volume, 'well cared for animals' type of places).

We have found cured hams, like parma ham, without a problem. We were just looking for 'good' ham for sandwiches etc.

I didn't look for ham when I was last in Sprouts, but I think going the way of buying a ham joint, and cooking it at home, is going to be the solution.

I'm not sure what you are looking for but I find the Safeway Select ham in natural juices very good. Unlike many of the others, it doesn't have the honey glaze and other things put in ham and is cheaper.

Plus there's the meat that can be sliced at the deli counter.

But there are so many different types of ham that you have to try each to determine which you like. I switch between "ham off the bone" and deli Virginia baked ham but when I want it to taste more like real ham, I buy the one pictured above.
