However it never ceases to amaze me, and I'm vocal about this to the natives, generally how poor their foodstuffs are compared to the UK.

It's a downright scandal with their crappy yoghurts, chocolate flavoured candy instead of proper chocolate, inedible bacon, tea as strong as warm water etc..

And their supermarkets? Same old same old, they've hardly changed the product offerings in the 15 years I've been here. Stupid frozen cardboard pizzas, one or two drinkable wines, rows and rows of "cookies".

No wonder when I go home I spend hours in Tesco's, Sainsbury's, M&S just checking out the latest food offerings.
You've found one or two drinkable wines in America? Tell me more. Where can I go to get them??

Northern New York and Vermont produce some pretty good farm cheeses. (I'm not too keen on the word "artisanal" but maybe it's appropriate here...)

Cow, sheep, goat, hard cheeses, aged cheeses, soft cheeses ... Hundreds of varieties in the Onion River Coop in Burlington Vt. Mind you, you have to ignore the prices, many are $25 a pound or more.

Read an article the other day about 'artis anal' and 'handcrafted' being two of the most overused words related to food and drink and I agree.

The bottle of wine that came with my Sainsbury's £10 meal deal tasted better than any wine I had over there. Might have been subjective.

You have a Sainsburys with a restaurant? I'm jealous. I've never seen that ... When I was over last winter, my son raved about the cheap and cheerful restaurants in Morrisons. They were OK, but the food was a bit basic, I thought.

We went to IKEA in Ottawa a couple of times recently, and they have a really nice Greek wine in their cafeteria. I think it's 250 ml or something like that, really drinkable and cheap. But whether they have that in the US I don't know.

Yes some Sainsbury's do have small restaurants but Sally's referring to the meal deal.
Pick and appetiser/side, entree for two and desert, plus a bottle of plonk, for a tenner.

Basically a meal for two including wine.

It's not great, but not too bad.

A lot of them are trying it now, M&S, Tesco, etc

Vermont sharp Cheddar is a lovely cheese, reminds me of the UK.

Yes that's it.

Included 2 proper creme caramels in little ceramic dishes to put under the grill.

I need to check them all out

They're all fab. While they might not be top restaurant quality, they are much better value than a takeaway and great for those nights at home where no-one wants to cook.

(hope you're settling back home ok Sally!)

Yes, we can get wonderful local cheeses at several local farmers' markets hereabouts, but the cost is a little eye-watering, especially the way my husband goes through cheese. Plus he doesn't really mean the soft cheeses when he gets a cheese craving--he likes the 'hard' stuff LOL i.e. well-aged cheddar & Emmanthal....

On the other hand, I love some of the local goats cheeses--could eat them all day--but I must say I do miss the reasonable prices for that, Camembert, & brie back in Blighty.

I've pretty much given up on cheese over here (my cholesterol is thanking me!) other than when I fail to dodge the crappy melted stuff that seems to find its way into a massive proportion of the restaurant meals here...!

Just about the only one I eat now as actual cheese (as opposed to meal goop) is boursin, which I only really eat when I am homesick for Singapore, as that is what I always used to have off the cheese board on Singapore Airlines... There used to be a reasonable local "lookalike" occasionally available at an intermittent farmers market, but it's so long since I've seen the seller that I suspect they have stopped doing it.

Try the M&S ones, I believe M&S were the first epople to do the 'dine in foir £10' nad they now do a midweek one as well, think that's only £6. We don't always like everything available in the meal deals, but you can buy any of the dishes as a single item.
