It would be less scary if there was a layby verge where you can at least attempt to get up to speed...but it's usually being flung into the fast lane from a hairpin bend where you are doing 20mph or get thrown off the road into a ditch

Sounds like the Parkway on-ramps in Westchester county, and east into CT, that are about 30ft long (though thankfully at least on the correct side). We were very glad we had bought our Mustang GT when we lived up there. I had never expected that having a car with a 0-60 time under 6s would actually be useful!

A car with a fast 0-60 time is always useful. Your avatar would back me up on that

I love the on-ramps on 290 in Chicago, that become off-ramps almost right away so if you don't merge quick enough you're back off the interstate again before you knew you were on it

There's one of those near me, that I sometimes take on to the interstate, and immediately off again. It is an effective way to make a left turn while avoiding three sets of traffic lights.

That's thinking outside the box

I was only caught out once on 290, after picking up my mate from Midway airport. I was buggering off quickly, as you do down that way cause it's a craphole, and was I talking away before I realised we were back on the surface streets again. Numpty that I am

I think they are common in cities where the interstates form expressways. Blink and you miss them as well

Of course it's useful but, unfortunately, it also puts up your insurance rates

Apparently my Honda S2000 is a "high performance vehicle" beause it has greater power and acceleration than is "necessary" for normal driving.

Well, I'm not sure who decided what was "necessary" but its overall performance (0-60 in about 6 seconds) seems just about "right" to me ...

That's because auto insurance is a racket run by people who haven't got the first clue about the very items they rip your insides out through your nose to make you pay for

Bostons old I-93 artery used to have some scary short steep on ramps with a poor view of traffic coming in the right hand lane.

We have a bin next to every set of mailboxes in our apartment complex. Each day they have to be emptied. People just open their mailbox and throw most of it straight into the bin.

No, Spaghetti Junction is north of Birmingham. The ramp I was referring to was, I think, the M40-M42 junction, which has since been redesigned. It wasn't a true on-ramp, but a merger, which as a result of topology looked like an on-ramp, where a single lane became the new fast lane of a three lane motorway.
