The comment was inappropriate in an American workplace, especially as a supervisor. I stay away from politics, religion and personal relationships at work.

Adult Americans should develop a slightly thicker skin and a sense of humor, but that's a topic for another day. People seem desperate to find offense in the most innocuous comments these days. Victim status something to be sought out and treasured as it immediately grants legitimacy to your opinions. It's a bunch of bullshit.

I think this is a very good idea. If you were to do such a thing, or even address the situation with them at all, perhaps cover your back by seeking advice from HR/management first, and have that person present to oversee the exchange. I don't think we can be careful enough in these situations.

Emphasis certainly on 'American', in my limited experience. I was called in as a witness to a sexual harassment case at my place of work a few months ago. I had to be interviewed and give a written statement. I was glad to do so as the person in question was totally abhorrent, but I feel like I've seen similar or worse situations in the UK that have faced zero repercussions. In this particular instance, the person was fired, and I have no idea if there were any further consequences. He deserved everything he had coming to him - I don't think there was a female in our department he hadn't made uncomfortable with his behaviour (both physical and verbal), and meanwhile, his wife worked in the same building, two floors down. I've wondered what reason he gave her for his termination!

Sounds like your co worker is being a pillock, but the rules are on her side. They're also on yours though. Just make sure you report her first. If she's going to threaten your career, take her down before she takes you down.
