It took me quite a while to convince my inlaws that it's WimbleDon not WimbleTon.

:D

We're heading to the homeland in the summer, I've been carefully coaching DH on pronunciation. As I told him I don't mind being married to a bloody yank but could he please speak properly when hes on my territory? He just laughs, so I'll leave him to get the stares and I'll find a burka or something to hide under.

I called the Today show a few years ago and complained about that! My husband thought I was mad. It was Ann Curry who kept saying it but by the end of the broadcast she pronounced it correctly. Did my phone call prompt the change, who knows, but every year I am screaming at the screen when anyone mispronounces it. It drives me up the wall.

At least you don't get asked if you are from Glasgow (last three letters rhyming with cow) or Edinburgh (either bowrow or burG at the end) which seem to be the only two places anyone has heard of in Scotland arrgghh...

Ah heck I am probably screwing up my pronunciation of Kuykendahl Rd and Fuqua Street here in Houston although I do like to add a Mutha at the front of the latter ;)

I'm glad it's not just me who gets aggravated by it. It's pure ignorance. When there's a "D" we pronounce it and when there's a "T" we pronounce it. It's really not that difficult!

We have a friend whose last name is Fuqua.... and also one whose last name is Koch... and he insists it is pronounced COOK.

I beg to differ ;)

Which is exactly what I told them. I said it doesn't have a 'T' ,never has had a 'T' and never will have a 'T'. Do they see a T in WimbleDon, no, so why are you putting one in! Aaargghhhh! In the same vein, I get infuriated when Brits pronounce Houston 'Who'ston! Of course, I have never mispronounced anything in my life;)
