Default Wild fires

Today I find my car covered in ash from just parking it at work for a few hours. I am finding difficult to comprehend the size of the fires. We are about 20 miles or so away from this fire and the air is so smoky. The fire managed to jump the Columbia river last night/today.

What is the world coming to , too much water in Texas and not enough on the West Coast.

Another reason to ban fireworks or restrict them to the non stupid population.

Yeah really bad down here in Eugene for a long time now. Even inside at work it smells like a bonfire. Hate to think what its like right near the fires. Just got back from a trip to Blighty and 2 weeks by the coast with nice fresh air. You can see the cliffs of France so much better now than when I was a kid. Back to the heat and smoke just makes me want to be back by the English Channel again.

Pretty bad north of the border in Vancouver and area.

As of 2 weeks ago, 2,210,000 acres have burned in BC. Worst fire season on record I believe now.

Previous worst was in 1958.

Hopefully the west will see some rains soon to help put these fires out, but I think some of the largest ones may burn into the fall at this point.

Anyone know what the environmental impact of fires of this magnitude is? That is - how many coal burning power stations running for how many days would it take to produce the same amount of CO2, or other 'bad stuff'?

It will take a very long time for the gorge to come back.

The sun looked so big and red this morning through the smoke, unfortunately I didn't get a photo. I really hope they change the firework laws over this. Unfortunately we can't legislate over stupid. Ironically the city this kid is from banned fireworks last year.

This may burn for a while. Plane efforts have been hampered by the amount of smoke. Yet another annoying thing, is that the largest fire fighting plane is not allowed to fly. Amazing plane.

The investigation surrounding the Eagle Creek Fire is still underway.

The suspect has been identified as a fifteen year old male from Vancouver, Washington. It is believed he and others may have been using fireworks which started the forest fire along the Eagle Creek Trail. The suspect was then contacted by law enforcement in the parking lot of the trailhead and was interviewed.

The Oregon State Police is seeking witnesses or those with information about the cause of the fire to come forward. Anyone who heard fireworks or other explosions in the area of the Eagle Creek Trail/ Punch Bowl Falls on Saturday between 10am to 5PM is urged to contact OSP at 503-375-3555.

OSP is being assisted by the United States Forest Service, Hood River District Attorney's Office, US Attorney's Office and the Hood River Juvenile Department.

This investigation is continuing and no arrests or formal charges have been made. The identity of the juvenile will not be released at this time.

A suitable punishment would be imprisonment until the Gorge and surrounding trees have fully recovered to their original state... That might take a long long time but might act as a suitable deterrent

This is one time the Vancouver thing really did cause confusion (for me anyway) I thought you meant Vancouver WA over the state border, not the International border. Then saw your name and I know you are in Canada, so I read again.

That is true, but quite a few are man made from discarded cigarettes, to camp fires , to fireworks, to discarded glass bottles.
