I thought most British Indian restaurants were actually Bangladeshi or suchlike?

Re: why cant i get onion bhajis
I went to an Indian the other day - oh dear, what a disappointment.
The onion bhajis were weird. Just fried onion, but loose on the plate, not in a ball like we get at home.
Oh and the vindaloo I ordered was so NOT spicy it was ridic. My friend's korma was spicier. I asked for some chilli powder to put in it and the (Indian) bloke said "if you'd wanted it hot you should have said." Come on!! It's vindaloo it's suppose to blow your socks off - at least it would do so at home.
I suppose they are catering to Americans tastes. *sigh* I do miss a good curry.

A majority are, plus there are a load of Pakistani ones, but for whatever reason they tend to identify as Indian (although not as much as they used to). It's not as if they even all have the same dishes other than having a few that are curry-based.

I think the Bhel-poori type restaurants are Indian? That's actually the cuisine I prefer, vegetarian and a lot of dishes with yoghurt.

Bhajis are actually pretty easy to make. With no decent Indian restaurants nearby, there was a lot of incentive.

Re: why cant i get onion bhajis
British Indian evolved years ago into a cuisine in itself, and as distinct from Indian food (in India) as Tex-mex is from Mexican food in Mexico. This does not mean that good British Indian and goof Tex-Mex are in any way "bad", "wrong" or "inauthentic" - far from it.
It's hardly surprising that food served in Indian restaurants in North America doesn't often resemble that served in the UK.
That said, it doesn't mean there aren't plenty of Indian restaurants in the US that are simply shite whichever way you look at it, but I've also consumed a fair few shite pizzas, Chinese meals etc. etc. since moving here.
Anyway, for those of you who are feeling withdrawal symptoms, here are a few I threw together the other day...
Disclaimer - they may not have looked exactly like these. I forgot to take a picture of them.

Re: why cant i get onion bhajis
I had the pleasure of eating in my favorite Indian restaurant in AZ over the weekend. Up in Flagstaff next to the Walmart.
I did note they serve Onion Bahjis described as - sliced onion deep fried with garbanzo flour.
Didn't actually order any, partly because we had already over ordered and I had forgotten about this thread until too late.
Also in regards to another Indian food thread, you can order mild, medium or hot. I had a lovely Lamb Do Piazza, we also had Chicken Korma, Saag Paneer, pilaf rice, Garlic Naan and poppadoms and rice pudding.

Lots of the hight street restaurants in the UK and US are, what I read as described as "Punjabi Restaurant Food", where they provide the usual standards.
Vindaloo is interesting between UK and US, in the UK it is famous for its excess of chilli and in the US for its vinegariness.

Re: why cant i get onion bhajis
I find that odd. My wife always has fish in a curry and around the UK it's very rare she's been disappointed. Occasionally it's not on the menu but when asked for, it's available (and price probably made up on the spot).
