LOL, so right... if you tell a Canadian he looks/sounds American it will be taken as a grave insult
(more for SDDep et alia, I know meauxna knows this)
I must confess that the Canadian accent now does my head in... last night I heard a few minutes of As It Happens on the radio. The story was about the preparations for the upcoming G20 summit in Toronto. To make way for the security fencing, some trees must be removed - or "taken oot" as they repeated about 100 times

King George and Churchill deeded Canada to the US in exchange for the Lend-Lease program, and our declaration of war against Germany (when JAPAN attacked us actually) in WW2.
Don't tell Willmore!

oddest two are Russia and France
Most common Austraila, Scotland and Ireland
sometimes Canada, I think that is when they know I am an native speaker, but not quite from around these parts
I think the Australia one happens after they hear me say 'mate', a lot of people seem to think Aussies have a monopoly on the word.
One person in four years here, has guessed my town right. I was impressed he could get not just England but the town too.

Itialian (I can understand that one...similar accent)
Oddly, never once has she been confused for Mexican or any other Hispanic country.

I love the Scottish accent and miss it.
On the other hand, my Scottish accent is always being mistaken for some other country or state

I am from Argentina and work as a receptionist in a hotel here in VT. So I get the "were are you from? / What's that accent I hear?" question EVERY single day of my life. People have guessed:
Poland (I am 1/4 Polish, so not too bad)
Italy (I'm 1/2 Italian... so I guess not bad)
Quebec (get this A LOT)
Russia (again, A LOT)
ENGLAND (I swear!!!)
France
One of the best ones was one I was working at a call center (so, over the phone) and a person told me I sounded like I was born in India but I had gone to boarding school in England
The best one, though, was the person who looked at me and just said: "Argentina?"

Re: Where is that accent from? (are you serious)
During my first year in the US an educated US co-worker gave me a compliment. He told me that I sure spoke good English for only having been here six months. Realizing that he was being sincere, I thanked him and remarked that I was glad to see that my night English classes were paying off.
