When they don't know you're British

Don't you just love it when the people you're hanging out with haven't figured out that your British yet, and start berating British people (emphasizing the usual stereotypes) and locations!

People usually ask me if I'm Australian or South African.

My usual reply is that not everyone in England speaks like My Fair Lady.

In Reno everyone kept asking me if I was Australian...it soon wore thin so I took to saying "No, but are you Canadian?" as my stock reply. This worked fine until one night in a casino this couple really were from Canada! I couldn't loose them all night after that!

I have laughed so much at this video - it reminds me of trying to top up my phone with voice recognition lol - and I get just as frustrated!

Just ask them if they're married to their cousin. That normally shuts 'em up.

Jim.

My favourite is when people forget I'm an immigrant - because I'm white and speak English - so they start banging on about immigration reform and 'shocking illegal immigrants' and denying people basic human rights.

Then I go: "But I'M an immigrant!" and they get all embarrased because there's just no comeback after that.

They are embarrassed FOR you for labeling yourself a victim, of course there is no comeback, perhaps it was because they where not talking about you. Illegal immigration is a ' Shockingly' serious issue in this Country and pray tell tell how are we denying People basic human rights ? We do not starve them or beat them or send them back walking through the desert.. We put them on Planes or buses back to their Homeland, Just because you want to live in the USA does not give you an exclusive right to live & work here without going through the proper channels... This is not Europe, we do things an entirely different way over here. From what I read in a majority of European newspapers, ' illegal immigration ' is a Hot Topic issue not exclusive to the USA...... If people are forgetting that you are an immigrant, take it as a compliment as it means you are becoming one of the Gang, pointing out that you are different will only get you excluded as the whiny Brit, we do not really care for socialist ideals that help make up a majority of the European mindset, we have enough problems coming to terms with our own..

I dont see anywhere in gingerert's post where she labels herself as a 'victim' as you put it, she's taking a light hearted look at life here as a British person in response to a light hearted post!
