From what has been reported in some news media they only want to cover operating costs but we shall see.

Yes, that is the immediate side effect, I had that with a meningitis vaccination years ago too, when my whole left arm went numb, but that was already known because of clinical trials.

But there may be long-term side effects that under normal circumstances the clinical trials will reveal. Like I said before, it's pretty useless having a vaccination that could cause some major health issues six months down the line. Not that that is going to happen, but it's something that needs to be considered and something that can add weeks or months to the timeline.

Then there is the issue of how long the vaccine lasts, and that is literally something that only time will tell. In other words, a vaccine could be effecive today, and still be effective next month, but if immunity has "worn off" after six months, it isn't going to be a whole lot of help. Maybe a booster would be required, maybe an annual booster, who knows, and under normal vaccine development timelines that would be tested, checked, and considered, but if a vaccine is tested now and found to be "safe" some of these other questions may not be adequately considered if there is a "rush to market".

All valid reasons why summer of 2021 is likely to be the earliest we get a truly effective vaccine, in my mind.

You will know the answer to this question. Multiple news sources are claiming no pun that the Federal Government have injected 500 million dollars into the Moderna vaccine program which has allowed for it to advance to this phase 2 stage of a larger vaccine trial. What impact will that government injection have on the ownership of any eventual patent? Is trump trying to get one hand on this?

I'm almost at the point of feeling this thread should be closed, but the entertainment value of that poster is high enough for me to think it should be kept open to see what other gems he comes up with.

This Forbes article is interesting and goes into a bit of detail about mRNAtechnology many of these companies are banking on to create a vaccine. Seems in theory this should result in quicker development of vaccines and be safer vs traditional vaccines.

It's also not just Moderna working on vaccine using this technology, BioNTech of Germany is working with Pfizer, German company CureVac is being funded by the Gates Foundation, US company Translate Bio is working with Sanofi and all appears to be focusing on mRNA technology.

"mRNA vaccines work kind of like a computer program: After the mRNA “code” is injected into the body, it instructs the machinery in your cells to produce particular proteins. Your body then becomes a vaccine factory, producing parts of the virus that trigger the immune system. "

"” NomRNA vaccine currently exists on the market, and nobody knows for sure if the technology will work, much less against this virus. To date, nobody’s been able to make a vaccine that works against a human coronavirus."

Also looks like Moderna has spent the last couple of years working with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease trying to develop a vaccine for MERS.

All these companies seem to be betting on new unproven technology that has not as of now led to any viable vaccines.

Entertainment...that’s exactly why we allow some trolls to carry on posting. When they get past their sell by date that’s when we say bye bye.

So why is it 2m in the UK? Not 1.83m?

And I have seen reports it should be a lot more.

A little update for those interested parties. Our Alaska trip has been formally cancelled by Princess so we have a future cruise credit coming back to us hence my postings in the Covid travel thread. The reason for cancellation was in a broad statement on website pointing at things like reduce flight availability and closure of cruise. So they seem to think this ban with will be with us a few more months yet.

Only 1.5 metre gap here in Australia and we are so far very unaffected by Corona.
