whats in a name
So this afternoon we attended our eldest daughter's baby shower where the baby's would be unveiled. I was expecting to my reaction to be muted but I was actually surprised how much I hated the name once it was unveiled - Juniper. Its a frigging tree! So now I have to pretend to be really positive about a name that I thought might not like but actually really dislike, even hate. Why? because they were surrounding by a forest of juniper when they got engaged. So your kid is going to suffer a life time of torment because of the landscape surrounding you as you proposed marriage.
I will get use to it I am sure and husband is already nicknamed her Nipper which my daughter has already vetoed . Fortunately we have 6 wks to get use to name but I really wish it was something like Abby as one of her other friends called her little girl.
How did you react to the names your grandchildren. Make me realise how little I took into account my parents or my husband's view on names when we were picking names. Our eldest daughter was called Elisabeth May which happened to be name of my Nan's favourite sister so she thought it was a really cool name. My Mum was upset as there was no J in the name. We spelt it with an 's' so she could shorten it to Lisa or Beth if she wanted as she got older as my husband hated the name Liz. What do all of her friends call her? Yep,that right LIZ and she hates the name Lisa
It will be interesting to see what Juniper, junebug, nipper, June, Juny actually calls her but I have feeling it wont be Juniper. Maybe she will pick her middle name- Marie- a very pretty name and not a tree!

My first grandson is named Covan after the lead singer in a band called Decapitated. Welcome to the world of strange names.

I have got to say I am not thrilled about the name Juniper, but each to their own i guess.
I dont have grand children yet and hopefully won't for a long time but I can tell you that I thought long and hard about the names we gave our kids. I thought about how they would be shortened and how other kids would/could make them rhyme at school. Some kids can be mean little buggers.
Anyhow my kids ended up being Emily Elizabeth, although she often gets Em. My youngest is Katie Hannah (Hannah being her middle name) but she often gets her full name, first and middle, go figure. So far so good, no mean name changes.

My grandaughters, having a momma from the South, have "normal" first and middle names, but are addressed by both names. Son and DIL wanted to use names from their families, so oldest has MY middle name and her other grandma's middle name (the same but spelled differently) for a first name and my mother's middle name for her middle name. Grandaughter number two the same, although I think it sounds more "Southern." IF they have another child, and they want to, , and it's a girl, DIL wants Aubrey. That's a boy's name. I hope they have a boy,
I must say commonplace names can be, er not so much. My grandmothers were Lena May and Winnifred Mabel. No, no, no!!!

We gave our kids really traditional biblical names. In both cases they became really common ten or twenty years later.. The year our daughter was born most girls in England were called Gemma ...

I'm waiting for my grandmother's name to come back in fashion.. Gertrude. She was always called Trudie. I think German-sounding names fell out of use with WWI..

Names are cyclical, I 'm the proof of that, sigh. Just like they went through the Brittany phase here.
I noticed in my Mom's family, all good New Englanders, they used biblical names for the men for at least two hundred years. I have in my direct descent line three Ephraims. What would you call then for use? Eff, Fram?? The mind boggles.

I have to say I like the name Juniper, it is different but also will be quite unique which sometimes is not a bad thing.

By the time she gets to the age of teasing, Juniper will be decidedly normal.

One of my grandsons is named Samuel Joseph (Sammy),after his Dad's best friend, who committed suicide, by putting a shotgun in his mouth. That's going to be an interesting conversation, when he's older.
