See Top Gear the other day?
Driving through deepest darkest Alabama with "Hilary for Pres" and "I'm Bi" painted on their cars?

My OH was wetting herself over the humour.
She's getting there.

That had to be the best Top Gear ever....

I loved the part where the sign for the state was covered in bullet holes .....and Hamster all dressed up looking like an extra for Broke Back Mountain...

Brilliant...

Civil War Border States:

"The term border states refers to the five slave states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and West Virginia which bordered a free state and aligned with the Union during the American Civil War. All but Delaware share borders with states that joined the Confederacy. In Kentucky and Missouri there were both pro-Confederate and pro-Union government factions. Though every slave state (except South Carolina) contributed some troops to the Union side,[1][2] the split was most severe in these border states, with men from the same family often fighting on opposite sides."

Missouri is in an odd spot. It's western, if you are from the East, Southern if you are from the North, Northern if you are from the south, and Eastern if you are from the West.

BTW, I can never remember when to capitalize N,S,E and W, so I did a little of both.

How about how northerners/southerners interact with other folks? Or even within friendships, or marriages?
Grandson, age 2, is already learning the ma'am word. Or as his daddy says, he is learning that when talking with an adult and you are answering a question, you end the sentence with a name, i.e. grandma, mom, dad, ma'am, sir.

Daughter is born and raised New Yorker, married to a born and raised Mississippian. Lots of differences.

A bit of getting used to here, I was raised to call an older woman, Mrs Jones. Here they say Miss Cindy and that includes adults.

I say it's the opposite too but not quite in the same way as you, being born in Berkshire.
