What age were you when...?
 

Hi all,

I'm hoping to move to America next year at which point I'll be 35.

Couple of random questions for y'all;

* What age were you guys when you made the move to the US?

* Do you wish you'd moved sooner / waited a bit longer?

* Anyone regret moving?

Thanks in advance for any responses - I realize everyone's story will be different but it'd be nice to gauge the opinion of those who have gone before me!

A bit older

Happened to be when it happened.

Not really, life take you in different direction, no idea what would have happened if I had not, maybe run over by a bus?, no buses here.

For most, it's going to be a bit irrelevant as you move when you get the chance, so it is what it is.

I was 23 when I moved but by marriage, so probably helpful if you're looking to move for work.

39. About the right time for me. I am glad I grew up in the UK, I am also glad I had my teens and twenties in the UK. Settled now though, and the UK continues to grow a more distant memory, even to the point I don’t really visit this forum that much anymore.

* It happens when it happens, earlier might have been nice, but absent time travel, their ain't much I can do about it

I was 35, hubby was 39, kiddo was 9. That's when hubby was offered the job, it hadn't really been on the radar prior to that so it was what it was. It was a good age for The Dude though as he started school early and didn't have to worry about UK/US curriculum, they were all,kind of at the same stage, he was even a bit ahead.

Same ish here. We have buses and trains which run someone over at least once a year. So far survived that. Timing it just after the financial crash may not have been the best time, could have been 3 months earlier.

No regrets, not yet. Maybe one, not going to the Grimm warehouse sale.

3. There are a few things I would change if I could go back in time, but I could apply that to my time in the UK too

We were both early 40's when DH got offered a transfer with work for 2 years, then he got asked if he would stay permanently. No major regrets after a lot of years here.

Almost came here as a child, may have found it different/better that way around?
I love to travel so seeing things not just from the tourist view is interesting! Do I want to live out my days here? No, its not for me. I don't regret coming, I would have always wondered what if.

I think a major factor though is how much you like the life you have now, how close your friends and family are, what activities you're involved in. It's not going to be the same, if you want/need it to work out then you're going to have to work hard at it :) Only my opinion, I cannot speak for others experience obviously.

2) Maybe earlier, but I would have not been at that point in my career where my employer would have transfered me and sponsored my visa
3) I regretted it when my mother got ill and died, but by that time I had settled down and had a child and there was no turning back

I first moved over age 21, stayed for 6 months on a temporary visa.

Moved over again age 30, got married, lived here a year, moved back to the UK.

Moved over again age 37, this time with three children. No plans to ever go back.

I don't regret any of the moves. As it turns out, it's quite handy that my children were born in the UK as it got them citizenship (neither husband or I was born in the UK).

I was 42.

I moved here because of my husband. If I had moved earlier I probably wouldn't have crossed paths with my now-husband when I did. I'm also glad that I came with plenty of life experience, having lived in 5 previous countries, travelled the world. It can get very isolated here. I'd hate to have spent my 20s and 30s working somewhere with one week annual leave a year and Europe a long-haul flight away. I'm pleased I spent that time in the U.K. and Germany and had the chance to go to Amsterdam or Berlin for a day or two, for example and then use annual leave for trips to Asia and Africa. I've seen a lot more of the world than the people I work with.

No, I don't regret marrying my husband and living with him.
