Default Water costs

Where I live we pay around $60 a month for a family of 4. My work colleague living in a different county, Multnomah (Portland,OR) pays about $120 a month for 2 working people. This seems to be a huge difference. Just curious what other people pay.

$120 seems high, I hear in these parts that $30-$80 is normal for a family. We have a well so it doesn't affect us.

The droughts kn recent years and some capital expenditures, and arguably mismanagement, have pushed bills waaay up in some municipalities because capital improvements were required for pollution control or growth, and the utilities have budgeted income based on sales of x million gallons of water - then multi-year droughts lead to water consumption of a significantly lower volume, and a budget crisis.

Where we are water costs are a flat rate per year billed with property taxes. Meters have been deemed more exspensive then they are worth for single family homes.

Normal single family home pays 384 per year.

Paid $434.00 for October/November bill. Metered. There are just two of us in home and irrigation is down to just two days a weeks.

......... and our rates are going up again in January.

What does that included? Any utility taxes to pay for roads which we have in the water bills in Milwaukie. Ours for 2 people average about $80. Much higher in the summer when Mrs L plays with the sprinkler system after the rain barrels empty for the summer.

Our average this year year (3 of us) has been $70.68, that covers water, sewer, trash and a $5 MUD surcharge. We have a pretty big lot to water but it's been a rainy year. Previous years have been closer to $95 average.

$20 - $25 a month for water only. Family of 2.
We're on a septic tank and private well for irrigation.

About $70 every two months, family of five. We would be paying another $290 a year for sewers but we're on a septic.

That sounds really high, even for two unless you have a big lawn to water? Mine is $128 for one in San Diego, and only about $24 of that is based on actual water used - everything else is base fees etc. Doesn't exactly encourage conservation.

FWIW I used 6 HCF for two months, including some irrigation. Going by the history the previous residents used 27 HCF in June/July 2014!

(And WTbleeb does the city use Hundred Cubic Feet as an unit? If you can't do metric, at least use gallons like everything else in this country!)

How do they enforce that?

We have two water wells, but only one is on file with the county. There have been talks of metering wells here in Texas, but as yet we've avoided it.

I have no idea. One well allows me to water outside the other does not. I think I can irrigate 1,000 sq ft but the way it is worded it seems I am not limited to one specific 1,000 sq ft.
