A good number are volunteer here too, but there is a core of paid, fulltime, staff.

Our fire department is wholly volunteer. Our volunteer ambulance corps has had shortages in recent years and so the village has had to buy in paid EMS cover from time to time. There's also county EMS which I'm pretty sure is all professional and some private EMS vans associated with the local hospital systems. But if you call 911 you'll probably have the village VAC respond at least initially.

Ours are volunteers but does not mean they do not get money, complicated.

Agreed, same here, just because you "volunteer", doesn't mean you aren't paid. I don't consider it to be complicated. And as noted by CivilServant, our local VFD has a small core of full timers, presumably ready to hit the road at a moment's notice, with the volunteers to follow along when they have responded to the siren.

I was once driving through Podunkville TN to a wedding. There was a roadblock by the local VFD soliciting donations. I did end up giving whatever change I had (I rarely carry cash), but it did occur to me that if I was a local and refused then perhaps the 911 call for my house burning down would be answered leisurely...

I don't think I've ever seen our local FD soliciting donations, then again, I don't frequent the 'church fete' type events that usually have a fire engine in attendance and could possibly be asking for such a donation.

I do, and no, they do not solicit donations. The fire engine that is sent to the fete is for fun and education for the children.

They come to the "touch a truck" events (yes I though this was very dodgy, until I understood it is exactly what it says, kids can touch the trucks) around here, as do the Police, EMT, School bus and lots of private firms, e.g. bucket trucks, dozers etc.. the donations are from people coming to the event. If you want one to show up for a kids birthday party a "donation" is required..

We have a voluntary donation added to our utility bill every month. If you don't want to contribute then you cross it out. It is for fire and ambulance service. I just accept it as part of our utilities and pay the $5 every month. All the firefighters and EMS are volunteers except for the main EMS guy and Fire Chief. They are on the City payroll ( that technically we pay with City taxes!)

I guess I never lived anywhere small enough in the US, everywhere I lived only paid career firefighters, EMT's and Paramedics no volunteers.

My current city here in BC no volunteer, they use full-time career and paid on call, paramedics all work for the BC Ambulance Service, all paid, although it takes many years to get enough senority to get a good full-time spot, gotta start out in small town nowhere and be on call only getting paid when on a call.

In the city limits the emergency system is paid for by taxes. There is a volunteer department mainly for the incorporated areas and there is an agreement with the sheriff's department to serve those areas too.

Our FD is nothing but fantastic. Unfortunately had them out once when all my alarms went off for a CO leak (turned out to be a defect with the smoke alarms). They were at my house within a few minutes.

Our last apartment building had a dysfunctional fire alarm system, so it went off several times a year, fire department was almost always there before we could gather the dog, her kennel, get dressed and go down the stairs, impressive response time, but it did help the fire hall was not even 1km away.

Our current place the fire hall is 1 block away, which saves us $8 per month on renters insurance, pays to live close to a fire hall I guess. (according to the renewal paperwork so goes into effect next month.)

Interesting, I didn't know you could get a discount for that, but it makes sense. I did know you can get a discount for being close to a hydrant (at least here).
