Updating Social Security Card details

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
Just had a meeting with my friendly bank manager - he is an absolute star and been a life-saver at times and he told me something else about not updating your status at the social security office.
When you apply for credit, they run your social security number through the system and if you haven't updated it, it will show you as being temporary resident and this affects how your credit application is dealt with. Wish I'd known that one earlier.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
Nutek, apparently your social security card/account is not updated automatically by the immigration service.
Someone else also remarked upon this in another thread when they said that if your social security number is run through e-verify for employment purposes and you went from L2 status to LPR (like me) and did not inform social security of the change in status then your status will show L2 on e-verify and not LPR.
So, my ss card which was issued when I first arrived has " valid for work only with dhs authorisation " on it. I have been LPR for 3 years and never bothered getting that legend removed. I figured it would all be done automatically. It's not. So as far as my social security number is concerned I am still a temporary resident.

I will attempt to seek clarification in the next few days. For a few reasons, it's a bit tricky. The guy was really trying to be super helpful so that people avoided an unnecessary credit refusal.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
I have the same SSN/card since 1967, never updated never been asked status.
or questioned in 50 years here, Never had any problems getting credit. Last time I checked my score it was 825.
People seem to be encountering problems I wasn't aware even existed.
I even have a Selective Service Card, is that still required?

"When You Apply For Credit, Creditors May Not...
Discourage you from applying or reject your application because of your race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age, or because you receive public assistance.
Consider your race, sex, or national origin, although you may be asked to disclose this information if you want to. It helps federal agencies enforce anti-discrimination laws. A creditor may consider your immigration status and whether you have the right to stay in the country long enough to repay the debt."

Yes. Even if people aren't in agreement with me about how banks may or may not access your immigration status, I would think that we are all in agreement that you need to check that the bank has the correct information and not assume they do. I most definitely will.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
Went into the local SSA office and updated them.
She said she was unsure about whether the wording would change but nevertheless it has been reflected upon my status and a new card was ordered on Thursday. Hopefully it arrives soon!

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
We were advised when we became US Citizens (I think by immigration or maybe at oath ceremony) to go to the SS office to update our citizenship status once we had our new passports. It involved completing an application form and taking it the nearest SS office with our passports. We were just given a letter confirming the update - no new card was issued.
It didn't seem to make any difference until we applied to FAFSA (College funding application) last year for our daughter (who became a citizen automatically when we did but we didn't think to take her to the SS office when we went). However, her FAFSA application was rejected until we were able to resolve the citizenship discrepancy with her SS.
Thankfully it did not cause too much of a problem but these records obviously do matter and are cross checked.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
Received my new social security card today. No wording at all, identical to my wife's so the lady at the SSA was wrong about wording not changing. It took 5 days to get to me.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
I would get that taken off pronto if you have a green card.

The point all along though was that you must update the ss office records.

Re: Updating Social Security Card details
It has no "Authorized to work with DHS" on there. Completely clear. Same as any other social security card that a US citizen has hence me saying "No wording on it at all".
Yes you should update your records as soon as possible with SSA.
