What is this text that is meant to change? All mine has on it is my name.
If you're on a work visa the card is over-printed in red "Valid for work only with authorization", or something like that. Apparently if you have a green card your SS card doesn't have that wording - which means that my original SS card was issued in error with the wording back in 2001 as I never held a work visa.

Nutek, apparently your social security card/account is not updated automatically by the immigration service.
Someone else also remarked upon this in another thread when they said that if your social security number is run through e-verify for employment purposes and you went from L2 status to LPR (like me) and did not inform social security of the change in status then your status will show L2 on e-verify and not LPR.

So, my ss card which was issued when I first arrived has " valid for work only with dhs authorisation " on it. I have been LPR for 3 years and never bothered getting that legend removed. I figured it would all be done automatically. It's not. So as far as my social security number is concerned I am still a temporary resident.

Correct. That is the individuals responsibility.

No. It's not. I thought this was common knowledge?

Which has absolutely no practical bearing on your credit worthiness, despite what the idiot 'Bank Manager' asserts.

So, guess where I'm going first thing Thursday morning?
That's bullshit, I run a credit check with Equifax every few years and nowhere does it mention immigration status. I've got an SSN and I've always been in a non-immigrant status in the US.

My only problem with banks and SSNs is that I get asked about FATCA compliance quite often so I have to keep signing declarations that I'm not a US person. I also get some curious questions when I have to fill in a W-8BEN but that makes no odds.

The only difference a bank would typically be interested in or keep track of would be if you have to file a W-8BEN or W-9 for your account, W-8BEN is for non-resident aliens. But anyone can file a W-9, even people unlawfully present.

There are various reasons why you should update your SSA records but your credit report isn't one of them as I explained in this thread: http://britishexpats.com/forum/usa-5...n-only-898670/

The "I didn't know about this" argument is not convincing. If you worked for WF, then I'd listen to you.

Update your details or don't. I honestly don't care.

WF have strict protocols in place regarding which US status gets which credit line and how much. It's in your interest to make sure that the details they have are correct.

The point Steve is making - which you are completely missing - is that the CRAs do NOT know your immigration status! Do you even realise it is not being disclosed to them by Social Security or even what information CRAs hold? I doubt it.

Also, no one cares about your experience with Wells Fargo (a firm which has committed serious financial crimes) when you continue to brashly and arrogantly offer misplaced and mistaken advice even when others more experienced (who don't listen to bank managers for financial advice) tell you otherwise.

Do you know for fact? Also what about the charges against Bank of America and Chase? WF is not the only financial institution to be found with irregularities.

Steve is not an LPR but resides in Canada. His social security card only allows him access to a retirement benefit if he is eligible. For I know, he could be a US Citizen.

I would suggest that PF step away from these threads. The anger and animosity displayed towards her is IMHO unwarranted.

I don't suppose it had occurred to you that you might be wrong.

Yes.

The law would need to be changed to allow such data to be disclosed to CRAs.

With regards to the assertion that CRAs are aware of your immigration status at social security, no, it hasn't.

Why PF continues to arrogantly push the 'WF is God how dare you question them' line is immensely irritating

There are OTHER data sources that banks refer to, other than credit reports, when doing due diligence on their customers.

Certainly when I've applied for credit, every application I've seen has asked if im a US citizen. Selecting no has asked me to explain what my status is.

Of course there are; but that is not in dispute. PF has asserted that not updating your status details with the SSO will have a negative impact on your credit worthiness.

That is simply, and outrageously, untrue.

They ask, because they have no way of finding out otherwise. It's a self admittance system. You are then required to provide proof if information is flagged that you're ineligible to work (algorithm not direct source based) - and even then that is a push.
