Oh FFS. So those that haven't lived in the UK for decades and may not even have set foot there for 50 years get to vote and decide for those of us that do actually live there?

I agree. After decades in the US I have no right whatsoever to determine the future for those who are UK residents and will have to live with the results of an election.

Don't worry it's not compulsory!

I would vote in a referendum if I was overseas because of the longer term implications and I might come back. But general election, no, not living there, not paying tax there, none of my business.

It should be remembered however by Brit expats living in the US who are also US citizens that voting in a foreign election could result in the loss of US citizenship

No, it couldn't, at least not in practice.

Of greater concern to me is how one reconciles the founding principle 'no taxes without representation' with the situation of permanent residents who pay taxes without representation!!!

Permanent residents get the option to become citizens, nobody is going to give non-citizens the option to not pay taxes!

Non-PR visa holders also have the option to vote, with their feet.

...eventually.

I just find it somewhat ironic that a people who fought for separation from their colonial masters because of that very issue impose it upon their own residents. 🤑

For five years, in the most lengthy scenario. Surely that is a pretty reasonable time frame? It seems appropriate to require the commitment to citizenship prior to bestowing the right to vote.

Not since 1967 and Afroyim v. Rusk.

This is a misnomer, there are many instances where you pay taxes without representation, landlords, non-citizens (both country and state), ect. I'm sure you have paid sales tax in a State where you are not able to vote. Many people pay income tax in States they are not able to vote.

This is about as real as rock healing.
