It's too bad the Virgin Atlantic non-stop to Manchester only lasted one summer season. Thomas Cook is for sale so there must be at least some doubt as to whether this service will exists down the road.
Your $170 flight was with Thomas Cook? Wow, that's really good! How did you find it? I've been using Kayak, and others, but the last deal I got ($650 or so) was on their website. I really don't have to go on any particular day or week, so I need to find these deals! I'm flying over there every few months now so I need to really save where I can!

Bit late in replying here but didn't see anyone else responding. I used my Costco (Citibank) contactless visa card in UK and it worked great (as contactless)! I used it in the London Underground, grocery stores, etc. They do have rather pathetic limits compared to the US, though - something like 30 GBP or similar. But still - worked great for simple purchases. Morrison's grocery stores wouldn't take ANY of my other cards; not my visa debit card, my visa credit card, nor my MC credit card. So it was a Godsend for groceries!

On the Thomas Cook website. It’s a seasonal service and this was the second flight of the season so that may have helped. I also booked it between 4 and 5 months before the flight.

Interestingly when I used my US contactless card in the UK this month I got over the £30 limit. It seemed the US limit applied wherever the card was used.

It's too bad that contactless cards/terminals are not widespread in the US as it's just so much more convenient. I guess the nearest equivalent is Apple Pay, which I have associated with a credit card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee. I used that pretty much on every transaction in Iceland this trip.

TonRob. Am I about to lose all my Virgin Atlantic air miles?

Unless someone with more money than sense buys the airline you probably are.

I read this article this morning, https://thepointsguy.com/news/use-mi...ne-bankruptcy/. At the time it was still possible to do non-flight redemptions with Virgin Atlantic miles, poor redemption rates but maybe better than nothing?

I'm sitting on just shy of 160k so interested in developments too. Could convert to Hilton at 2:3 but don't feel ready to pull that trigger yet.

I have 120k. I thought about Hilton, but like you I will wait a while and see what happens. Keep us posted if you hear anything.

To be honest I'm not currently watching things quite as closely as I used to, but will definitely report back if I see anything. I mostly keep up by following a few specialist travel bloggers on Twitter.

Apparently Virgin is giving up its Gatwick operations.

I traded the Virgin points for Hilton points. Done and dusted.

Sometimes can be good to get some closure.
