restroom when out, bathroom any other time. I still say I'm going to the toilet (apart from when I was in Olive Garden once and had to ask where the toilet was, I had to rephrase)

I never knew this - wow! I use bathroom for every type of toilet ( cant bring myself to say restroom) and my (american) husband always uses the term restroom for everything. I think its flexible. At least I havent had any strange looks.
