Tim Tams in Tesco's?
Have I heard correct, someone told me you can find these at Tesco's now?
I am bringing some back with me as my hubby wants to taste test them alongside Penguins.
How accessable is Ozzie wine in the UK and how much does it cost? Looking at red wines.
Cheers

Hi Merlot
True about the Tim Tams altho you cant get all flavours
As for the wine, be prepared to be disappointed. There is nowhere near the selection that I expected but I guess I was spoilt with having a Dan Murphys on my doorstep in Melbourne. Supermarkets for the most part sell their own label or big names likes Hardys and Jacobs Creek. They seem to mainly cover the £5-8 range. Have also seen the cheaper end of Wolf Blass in the supermarkets.
The main off licences (Victoria Wine, Wine Cellar) only seem to do a small selection - JC and Hardy's again, Lindemans, Penfolds.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cab Shiraz is £8 OVER HERE I think I only used to pay $10 from DM's.
I found a couple of independant wine importers here - I have been able to get St Hallet (Old Block - altho Tesco sell a £6 St Hallet Shiraz), Hollick and Katnook labels to name but few. The Old Block was £15 for a '98 - I paid $60 in Australia for a '98.
I went out the other day in search of a Coonawarra cab sauv and even in the specialist shop there wasnt a single one. The best I could come up with was a Mclaren Vale/Coonawarra Cab Sauv from Tesco (£6.50)
I have shipped some wine back but got stung for VAT by Customs.
Mmm, Tim Tams, that's got me thinking...!!

Try www.majestic.co.uk - these warehouse stores are everywhere in the uk and carry a wide range. You can search on their web site.
One tip for the aussies, you may not realise it living in oz where they penalise other countries products so heavily, but you can get wine from south africa, usa, canada, italy, morocco, tanzania, chile, peru etc etc.
Maybe if you have the opportunity to go to the UK why not take advantage of the opportunity to experience the competition which you are denied at home. Fortunately for us, a lot is far better than the the aussie wines which seem to be reducing in quality every year.

Merlot did ask about Aussie wines, not what the competition is like.
I am disappointed with the selection of Aussie wines here in the UK. AUstralia make some fantastic reds, no doubt about it.
Are you disapponted with quality because of poor vintages or the fact that UK stockists seem to supply mostly cheap-end stuff?
BTW, I found plenty of foreign wine available in Oz.
Thanks for the link

Fascinated to know about all the foreign wines available in Oz - tell us more ? 2 french, 1 sth african and a bottle of black tower last time i looked.
The quality of oz wine is generally reducing. There are pockets of quality but the overall trend is down due to consolidation of the industry and addition of too much sugar to compete in the us and uk mass markets.
You would'nt buy a decent wine in an oz supermarket so why are uk supermarkets the only source discussed here. You can get most aussie wines in the uk if you know where to look. Any aussie in the uk should take the opportunity not afforded them at home and experience the wines of different countries which are definately improving whilst oz ones are going backwards. imho.

The problem with Aussie wines is they reflect the Aussie personality. Not very subtle. An oaky Chardonnay does not need a whole tree in it.
There are good wines but Aussies do not know much about foreign wine because they are priced out with tarrifs. Kemmenys in Bondi and David Jones are the few bottle shops offering a decent range of foreign wines. Even then they are pricey.

Just as you yourself mention, shop around. If you've only found 2 French, 1 South African and a bottle of Black Tower you obviously aren't looking as widely as you could do!!

I wouldn't bother with Ozzy Chardonnay only the reds.
IMO I have always found the NZ whites, in particular the Cabernet Sauvignon, to be better generally.
The flip side being I wouldn't give to much time to NZ reds either.
When in rome and all that, when I am in Europe I would be more tempted with some of the French (can I say that). You are so close to France in the UK that you can opo across and pic up some very good wine that never makes it out of France.
Unlike the NZ stuff, etc that never makes it to the local table as it is always exported (apart from now where you can get some great wine due to the high NZD and not profitable so much for mass export), France keeps something like 80% for internal consumption.
You will pay more but it's all relative but nowhere have I had a wine like Puligny-Montrachet or Murcurey (the white). Most of the Mercurey region (just below Champagne)is red (pinot-noir)but about 20 odd % is white (chardonay), it really is the dogs.
You probably pay about 50EUR+ per bottle for the Mercurey in France but it's a damn fine wine.
Like I said, when in rome!

Just noted that you shipped some of the good stuff back and got stung..Was this in the container? and if you don't mind me asking how much did you ship back and how much did you have to pay? I am also considering sending some back as I remember how much it cost in the UK compared to here. My dear hubby thinks I am mad..perhaps but then wait and see what he thinks when he goes to Victoria wine in the UK looking for a Wolfblass
