Default Thomas Cook goes under

can't say I have happy memories of flying with them but nonetheless a great shame and of course I feel very sorry for all those people stranded

Not a surprise, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.

Not good for those passengers affected though.

I'm glad to see that the government chose not to bail them out.
The shareholders and management need to be held accountable.

I'm booked on TC this Saturday, SFO->MAN. Not sure I can find a reasonably-priced alternative at this point in time; don't even know who to call or how to pursue a refund ...
Equivalent flights seem to be in the thousands at this point in time.

That’s tough, sorry to hear this.

Do you have travel insurance as they would be my first call after confirmation that your flight is canceled.

ETA
If you paid for the flight using a Credit Card that may also provide a refund for goods or services purchased but not received.

Not all Travel Insurance would cover this.

Refund via credit card assuming that is what you used to pay.

Today's fun task will be pursuing this. In all my years of traveling, I've been lucky enough to avoid any major flight 'issues' so I guess this is my 'turn'.

I never buy travel insurance - I've always been cynical about whether insurance companies will pay up or not ... would be interesting to see whether they would actually pay in this situation - small print may exclude this eventuality. I did use a Credit Card so I'll pursue that. I was shocked at how cheap TC was - I booked this trip just 3 months ago and it was only $600 or so. This was to be my 3rd non-stop SFO-MAN trip with them, I was getting quite used to them! I've also flown recently with IcelandAir, they too can be ridiculously cheap. I think I pre-paid for a car rental also ... that's something else I'll need to pursue ...

We also never insure our flights but always pay by credit card. Fortunately we’ve never been in the situation you find yourself now. We’ve always taken the attitude that of the money saved over dozens of flights we may need some of it for when things go wrong.

Just read (for the first time ) the 'fine print' on my purchase;
"This sale is not ATOL protected. For further information please
see our Terms and Conditions and Conditions of Carriage on the link below
https://www.thomascookairlines.com/terms-conditions.jsp".

On the phone now with my credit card 'dispute' department ...

After a long wait to get through, they say I'm not liable once they "file the case".

Next step - ditto for the car rental, which I believe I pre-paid ..

Cape Blue in another thread pointed me to Norwegian Air, I can get a round-trip with them SFO->LGW for about $750 plus $100 for baggage. Not bad for short notice.

Good luck. (We flew them LA to London in March and they were excellent)

https://fortune.com/2019/09/04/norwe...7-max-fallout/

Its founder and CEO resigned abruptly in July. Its stock is down more than 85% in the past year. Passenger numbers are falling as it’s had to ground planes and cancel routes. And now Norwegian Air is asking creditors for a two-year extension to pay back $380 million in bonds, casting further doubts that the once high-flying airline can weather what’s been a year to forget.

Steerpike’s custom seems to be the kiss of death for airlines. You may wish to roll the dice with Norwegian but I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole.

No-one is stranded, all package holidays are ATOL protected so people will continue their holiday in the normal way, the only problem might be that they are flown back to a different airport than the one tjhey started from, they will then be bussed to the correct airport to collect cars etc.
