The Manhattan skyline looks very nice at night but I take issue with the word 'proper'. If your definition of a "real" city is one that ignores the beautiful history of e.g. London or Budapest and replaces it with masses of tall buildings then few would agree with you.

I think London has a good mix of historical/cultural buildings and some awesome skyscrapers.

I think Charlotte has a nice skyline, but nothing on the scale of New York.

I find it very hard to consider cities like Budapest, Prague, Zurich, Copenhagen, have anything remotely comparable in the USA, or that New York and Chicago can compare to London or Paris. Las Vegas certainly unique and fun, and San Francisco for a visit charming, but of course nothing compares to Newcastle upon Tyne !

Hong Kong I remember flying in years ago flying right past the tall buildings and seeing the HSBC tower right out the window, was quite impressive. San Francisco has some really cool buildings in the financial district.

That must have indeed been many years ago since flights haven't landed downtown (the old Kai Tak) since 1998. I heard you were close enough to see into people's apartments on the approach.

Yes around that time, it was quite incredible.

There are a few things I like here:

1. Yes!

2. More cycling lanes as well as dedicated cycle trails (where I live in the US).

3. Bigger car parks for shops & businesses. (Hardly ever have to pay here in the small town where I live either.)

4. Also I must say the snow removal here in my part of New England beats that in Cambs hands down.

Snobbery is not an attractive quality, so take issue all you want but you sort of lose credibility when you start claiming your definition of "real" somehow beats mine as if subjectivity is something that can be quantified.

I'm interested in all kinds of architecture, from 12th century Gothic, all the way through to the modern skyscraper. There is a castle from 1174 less than two miles from where I grew up. Belfast has some beautiful Georgian rowhomes but I'm still a sucker for the Chicago skyline. Sue me.

Indeed. Going back farther than the 12th century as well, of course, I just arbitrarily chose that one because of good old Carrick Castle
