As kids we used to roast them in the open fire in the living room. I have fond memories of walking down Snig Hill in Sheffield, and stopping halfway down to buy roasted chestnuts off the ‘chestnut man’.

Scouse bought me some on my first trip to Europe and it was a bit like a romantic dream - winter's day in Rome, new relationship, he buys me a little paper bag of hot chestnuts from a street vendor. I spoiled the moment when I spat them out, they were 'orrible.

We used to roast them on the front rail of the fireplace at home, too. But I loved the ones I’d buy hot off the brazier in a little paper bag in both London and New York. A favorite winter gift to myself!
