Is the learning difficulties thing being thrown out there just as an excuse, and if so isn't that a bit off ie "don't worry about her freaking out, she is a spaz so it is only to be expected".
Yes, although not that new. The UK term "mentally handicapped" has not been used for some years now.

FFS what is the term for metally handicapped today that some kaftan wearing social worker will deem inappropriate tomorrow then?

We don't have mentally handicapped or physically handicapped now, it's just people with learning difficulties or disabilities or both!

If you can't be bothered with all of that, then just stick with "spaz" or "spacker".

Really don't appreciate this one bit. I'm assuming you are in control of all your faculties. There's no excuse for this.

I never used those terms either but can't see what the hell was wrong with "mentally handicapped" and cant see whats wrong with "retarded" either. Retarded just means what it says on the tin...held back.

No matter the word you use to make it sound "better", it means the same thing. It's a shame "retarded" is no longer used, it was the best word for the job.

I always liked 'simpleton', it has so much more of a Hans Christian Anderson feel to it

I agree. We all know what the euphemisms really mean.

She's high strung and weird like a lot of creative (and some not so creative) people. I think I'd prefer to be known worldwide as being "difficult" or "eccentric" rather than somebody with "learning disabilities" or "learning difficulties" who was deprived of oxygen at birth. Now instead she'll be forever known as the retard that had the spaz attack when she didn't win BGT.
