Re: On the subject of Aldi... who shops there?
I know, I'm sorry you guys probably don't read french and I know I'm not supposed to post in anything except english but I am heading off to my aldi this afternoon because of this article...
Un rosé vendu 7 euros chez Aldi classé parmi les meilleurs vins du monde
Basically a french rosé wine has just won a very prestigous award and it's only sold in the UK and USA!! Not France...

Anyhow, I don't think I have ever seen "rosé" and "prestigious" in the same sentence before.

did you understand the article? He sold his entire vintage to Aldi and this is normally done in advance of the wine being ready.
I have to agree about rose though, it needs to be cold to be drinkable but a bad one is really awful even chilled. TJ's has a good selection at prices I'd expect to pay for rose, ie under $10. HEB grocery store wine buyers however do not have a clue about rose. They continue to stock one from near me in France (Tavel) which you'd find for about 5 euros in France and HEB flog it for $18 - it's horrible.
Wholefoods had a Gaillac Rose for $13 which I stumped up for because that really was my local, local region and I was feeling a bit homesick. It's not usually great wine but this was lovely, really lovely. Can't find it now so back to the $5 ones in TJ

Our local Aldi, is a old car showroom and it's a concrete mess. The parking actually sucks and the place is basically a cock to get to. So no, we don't go very often.
It's not worth the hassle as other places aren't bad for prices either. Holiday items and chocolates are good though.
Used to shop at one in Austria, where my brother lived. Was so much nicer of a store there compared to the couple I've been to around here.

petitefrancaise, did you know that Aldi is opening in Pflugerville soon. No actual date yet but they have started building the store now and are hiring staff.

I also heard that Lidl are opening up all over the US too. I used to buy loads of household bits and bobs from them. I've still got the garden chair/lounger cushions that I bought in France in 2003. Still look good.

how did my post about cheap groceries turn into this... btw this is something very few of my american friends get... how us 'reserved' Brits can take the most innocent of subjects and turn it into something rude and crude

That's not surprising in a country that doesn't understand that a slang word for testicles makes the perfect exclamation for almost any occasion!
