If you met a newcomer to your state, what would you recommend them getting to help them fit in/pass themselves off as a local?

For Colorado:

1. Nalgene bottle.
2. Dog with quirky bandana.
3. Sorel Caribou boots.
4. Patagonia Nano Puff jacket/black North Face Denali fleece.
5. Subaru.
6. Plaid shirt, yoga pants, trapper hat, Ugg boots with tassles.
7. Vaping stick
8. Bronver Donkeys hat or wool hat with Colorado flag on it.

- Baseball cap
- Panthers jersey
- pickup truck jacked up with no muffler
- sweet tea and bbq

Extra large pick up truck with gun rack and flag flapping on pole .
Gas station polystyrene cup for spitting tobacco.
Large cowboy hat and cowboy boots, jeans and belt with oversize buckle.

My recommendations are probably not state-wide, since my state though small-ish has at least two distinct and different sections to it that I have discovered so far....

For my local area:

1. Merrill footwear of any seasonal kind (from sandals to full-on high topped mountain boots)
2. Down/fleece vest until it snows
3. Puffer snow jacket (in snow)
3. Jeans all year round
4. Suburu to drive (known to perform well in snow)

Sounds a bit like Portland. Beanie hat also required, and good knowledge of Portlandia and Grimm.
It is OK to substitute the Subaru with a prius.

1970's or 80's era pick-up, preferably with a little cosmetic rust.
Bumper sticker (your choice of UNC or NC State)
Bible (KJV only)
Selection of hand guns and long guns
Tin of chewing tobacco
Case of Coke
Case of Bud/Bud light
Well worn T-shirt, of similar vintage to the truck
Well used work boots

Illinois - Chicago area (downstate is another country)

1. Cold weather gear that doesn't matter when splashed with salt-laden slush
2. A car with visible rust (note reference to salt, above)
3. A refillable Starbucks travel coffee cup
4. A Chicago Bears shirt
5. A grill, with a supply of polish sausage
6. If a woman, dyed/highlighted hair
7. Cargo shorts for the summer

Add to the California list: baseball cap with blonde ponytail out the back of it and yoga pants that come just below the knee (for women).

California is too diverse, so here's my locale of San Diego:

1. Prius with 'I love NPR' license plate holders and faded Obama/Biden sticker
2. Flip flops / board shorts / sunglasses / yoga pants
3. Case of craft beer (IPA with particularly aggressive hops)
4. Fish taco and acaii kale berry bowl
5. Part time gig as a Kripalu yoga instructor
