Re: Sneaky ways for ICE to get rid of 'undesirables'
So having had a totally disjointed rant I found some time on my hands yesterday afternoon and decided that I could at least update the address on my title/tag. This time I went to the office I have used on previous occasions with no grief.
Girl on the desk confirms that yes I do have to go through the appointment hassle but yes I can do my tag at this time. 'Here's your number, go sit down until called'. 15 seconds later my number is called
Whilst chatting to the lady sorting out my title update about the aggro she said 'that's odd, computer is asking if you want to update your license details for 25 bucks, postal service only'.
Hell yes, so I now have a license coming via post for 6.25 bucks less than it would have cost me if I'd have gone to the central office and made an appointment??? Good result but what a messed up way to get there!!

You do know about the reputation of the DMV in the US, right?
Some people blame the DMV for the reason that Americans don't want the government running the healthcare system. I suspect that there is more than an element of truth in that rumour.

California DMV generally is a miserable experience, having an appointment makes it more tolerable as it's quicker but still not a pleasent experience.
Too few offices and too many people.

Only had good experiences at NC DMV.
To have a licence they require proof of legal presence. The state's policy is NOAs are fine, as long as they were dated in the last so many weeks (can't remember the exact).
Mine was out of that, but the woman assisting me called Raleigh head office to override the system to cut me a break. The policy is a bad one, but that's by the by.
I ended up writing a nice letter addressed to her supervisor for that. I doubt it helped her, but I figured they must get a lot of complaints, so one compliment would be nice.

Can't say I've had any bad experiences here in Colorado.
Drivers license stuff was dealt with down in Boulder. Friendly staff and not a long wait at all. Took a little bit for the lady assisting me to understand the NOA's etc but once her supervisor came over to help it was taken care of.
Car registration stuff we do in Arvada. Staff aren't very friendly but we've never had any issues and if we go at a sensible time the wait isn't bad either.

I am not amused! For some while now I have tried on various occasions to update my driving licence online, change of address. I always seem to come up short somewhere and the whole system chuck's me out, it's been getting right on my wick.
Today I managed to finish early so I thought I'd just pop down to one of the county tax collectors offices and sort it out in person, they're usually fairly laid back about white furriners. Anyhows, the girl behind the desk cops an earful of my accent and, unprompted, thrusts a sheet of paperwork in my direction and says fill this in.
Said paperwork basically consists of three checkboxes, are you a USC (we can serve you), are you a naturalised citizen ( we can serve you too but obviously we'd like to highlight the fact that you weren't born here!) and third one was any other person ( you have to make an appointment in advance at the county issuing office, presumably so that we can let ICE know just in case you're one of the great unwashed!)
'Oh', says I, 'I've never been to that office because they always advertised restricted minimal services', 'ah', says she, 'it all changed at the beginning of the year'.
So now, this schmuck immigrant has to go cap in hand to his boss and ask for time off to update his licence and tag and then go ask him for yet more time off when USCIS decide to interview me for Removal of Conditions/ biometrics.
And then they wonder why so many undocumented persons are unlicensed and uninsured.

If you don't like it, go and live somewhere else

As for unpleasant dmv experiences, a little tip might be - check out a different dmv office - also, you can see general wait times listed on google.
The dmv I used for 15 years in Randolph NJ typically had a libe out the door & a minimum hour wait.
I boight a new house in a slightly more rural area, went to a different dmv - & there I have never had to wait more than a couple minutes.
Experiences can vary significantly, depending on where the office is.

And that's where you think the real problem is ?

We'd heard bad things about the other two and went to the one in Arvada and apart from vaguely grumpy staff, no complaints.
I feel like people are already pissed off before they even set foot in the DMV and so they're probably abrasive to staff which gets reciprocated. Who knows

Re: Sneaky ways for ICE to get rid of 'undesirables'
Just been to the NYS DMV in Yonkers to renew my license and upgrade it to an Enhanced license (just paranoid about not having evidence of my status on me now that I've returned my GC to USCIS). The initial part; checking docs, sight test and photo was a breeze, took about five minutes. Then I had to wait over an hour to be called to another window to pay for it all!
No wonder Americans are suspicious of the concept of government-run healthcare.
(I also went to the SSA a few blocks away to update my social security record. I lied to the security guard that I was resident in Yonkers - the actual clerk just wanted to verify I lived in Westchester County - and I got everything done and dusted in about ten minutes.)

And I was pretty well disposed to being sympathetic to the poor under paid public servants at dmv.
And then I went there.
And now I feel differently.
