Re: Snake.........
Eeeek!
We had a black cobra coming into our kitchen in one place we lived in in Singapore.....the police deal with them there but we had security guards at the condo entrance and they put a line of sulphur down which apparently snakes avoid.
I'd call your Town Hall if I were you....failing that the local police may know (I wouldn't call 911 though, just the local no!)
Good Luck! (Take a photo if you can!)

Re: Snake.........
Why did you move to Florida if you are afraid of a little ole snake? Better call St. Pat to rid Florida of its belly crawlers.

Re: Snake.........
It is most likely a Black Racer (long and thin and fast). Just open the screen door and shoo it away.
How big is it anyway ? We get babies in our pool, about 3" long and 4' ones on the lawn.

A few weeks ago my wife and I took our daughters to see an exhibit of every Texas snake at a local wildlife center. It was great - they had one of every species native to Texas on show in tanks, and the whole thing was very educational and well run.
After looking at them all, we sat down to a 10 minute talk from the snake expert who explained how you could easily tell the few poisonous snakes in Texas (e.g. Coral snake - "Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black, friend of Jack"). However, his description of how to tell a Cottonmouth from a Water Snake was pretty worrying - the Cotton Mouth has "striped lips", the Water Snake doesn't. Supposedly. If you can take a look at its lips while it's striking at you at 100mph!
Anyway, after the talk we decided to take their nature trail. Half a mile into our walk we were on a tiny little path through a swampy patch by the lake when a big frog jumped straight under my foot, and I half squashed him. I jumped back, only to see that the frog was being chased by the biggest black snake I'd ever seen (at least 4', possibly 5').
As luck would have it, he was as scared as I was (and I was SHITTING myself!) and turned back the way he came.
"Did you get a look at his lips?" asked the kids.
