Sir Beckham?

Apparantly there is talk that David Beckham could receive a Knighthood..... Sir Beckham

Personally, I don't really think he has done all that much to deserve it. Does anybody think he deserves to be Sir? and Victoria to be Lady Beckham??

There's also a lot of Sirs whove done a lot less and gotten one I'd imagine.

Rebecca Loo's aside, I think he's been a pretty good ambassador for English football.

He is no Bobby Charlton or Stanley Matthews in my book. Their conduct on and off the field always had my admiration. Personally he would not get my vote.

Granted, but I don't think Stan or Bobby had to put up with the intense media scutiny that Beckham has either. Works both ways.

Nope.
but they have only ever won something when Bobby Moore was captain.

Bryan Robson (and others) have been in the honors list in some form or another........after failing to achieve also.

jesus even Bert Trautman got in the honors list and he was a German POW

True.

I also think he has been a pretty good ambassador for English football, but you said it yourself "pretty good" and to me being pretty good means you could have been a hell of a lot better, and being pretty good as an ambassador for English football is really not all that much of a reason to be given a Knighthood. I can't think of many past England football captains who were given a Knighthood, and they (for the most part) were also pretty good ambassadors for English football.

Ask an American to name an English soccer player and maybe you'll understand. However, given the general standard of knighthoods, I'm planning on getting one for putting the toilet seat down.

Judging by past precedents, it does seem the OBE / MBE is the honor of choice for England captains.....

Billy Wright CBE
Bryan Robson OBE
Alan Shearer OBE
Kevin Keegan OBE
Emlyn Hughes OBE
Gary Lineker OBE
Jimmy Armfield OBE
Peter Shilton OBE
Tony donkey Adams MBE
Ray Wilkins MBE
Stuart psycho Pearce MBE
Alan Ball MBE
Robert Charlton CBE (captained England for 3 games)
Alfred Ramsey CBE (obviously not knighted for being England captian)
Alan Mullery MBE

I'm not a huge Beckham fan but I have to disagree with a lot of stuff posted. Yes, recently he was rubbish for England and has some dodgy stuff in his personal life which you could make a case for not giving him anything. However he does a huge amount of charity work and invests a lot of money in a lot of countries to help kids and families who need it, and not just regarding football. It's not about being pretty good ambassador of English football but rather an exemplary ambassador of football and good will around the world. I'm not sure he should be knighted, but you can make a strong case for it.

And so it should be for Beckham, he is not a cut above the rest.

maybe, not for me to say, I have no problems with him as a Sir or an MBE or whatever.

I think he's just an average Joe made good by kicking a ball.........he's done alright for himself.
I'm not gonna knock him for it either.

I agree with you :) but I think "Sir" is just a tad to much.

He does already have an OBE, got it in 2003. It's just the Knighthood part that I think is stretching things somewhat.
