I must be from a very different class then, as no one I know calls it that, in fact its more likely to be called fittie, fitba or footie where I am from.

I do know its origins though, I chose to learn about football as part of my P.E. Studies in secondary school and also taught basic skills when I did youth work.

Even with knowing that, I would still say Football is what it is known as in this country

It's good to know at your advanced age that your memory still goes back that far.

Funny, I can remember the Boer War like it was yesterday, but stuff that happened more recently, like the Ramsay MacDonald administrations and such, are a total blank

How presumptious..Soccer / Football .BBC, ITV,Skysports, lads on the streets , still ask about the "Football Results" , then again thankfully there are alot of people , who like myself, will accept both terms, and use them both, in all situations.Except when referering to "American Football" or our own Rugby football.

Probably the most annoying, are the people who try and police peoples use of terms
in their own language, especially where no given explanation is given has solid
correct translation or usage.
American English, is the only English that tends to differenciate, but we Brits, might
make spelling mistakes, our grammer is often willy nilly, but football or soccer, has
never had a split fraternities, both are acceptable we wouldnt go to war on it.
Now "if thats not cricket", we might do, because bad form will not be tolerated.
So penalties will be sort, and no offsides of thought will be granted, because nobody
understand the reasons anyway.

Not quite sure what you are saying in your rambling post, but I was merely saying that the game of association football has been called "football" or "soccer," either one or the other, in Britain for over a century.

I wasnt rambling, I was dribbling, with a few cross-overs, thrown in free.

Furthermore, 'soccer' is a British term anyway. One of the 'Oxford -ers', similar to 'rugger'.

Now, can someone please tell me what the phrase 'penalties will be sort' means, inquiring minds want to know ...

Like that term for perpetrators of anal sex... Oxford entomologists back in the nineteenth century noticed that members of the order Hemiptera sometimes coupled with another male, and the rest is history.

Certainly where I grew up Soccer was an elitist term used by rugger types as Rugby is the oldest Football.

Yup, that may be. In my case, I remember primary school playground, south London, 1950s. We definitely used the term soccer more than football, and at that age we didn't know about rugby football.

It means "sought" is a bit tricky to spell.
