Ah, but you're a "No" (aren't you?).
What would the "Yes" voters think?

United Kingdom of Southern Britain and Northern Ireland.

Before today I had no idea about Scottish empire ambitions, that there were a number of Scottish colonies in the Americas. The Darien Scheme (in Panama) being the crown jewel, that fell flat on its face, and partly helped towards acceptance of union a few years later. Fascinating all this history. Anyone else know about this, was I alone in my ignorance?

The Darien disaster bankrupted Scotland and made the Union a financial necessity not merely something to accept. There was a BBC documentary on it a few years back.

To me that's the root of all this nonsense...
And yet many are unaware.

I only learned about it a couple of years back when the referendum thing kicked off again. I don't think we ever covered it in history at school ... we were far more focused on useful stuff like whether Tolund Man favored weetabix over shredded wheat for his last meal.....

I understand that one interpretation of the failure of the Darien Scheme was that the dastardly English kiboshed it by refusing to allow their colonies to trade with Darien, and did so with a view to forcing Scotland into a union.

A different interpretation is that the Scots were daft to even think of establishing a colony there because
a) Darien is extremely inhospitable; even today the Pan-American Highway does not cross the Darien Gap.
b) It was right slap-bang in the middle of Spanish America, and so Spanish hostility did far more to destroy the colony than English. (Note that the English colonies were almost all on the fringes of the areas the Spanish were active in.)

Twitter is full of voter intimidation stories. Both sides are at it, but it seems slightly worse from the yes campaign. Graffiti outside polling stations warning of consequences for voting no, marches and parades outside polling stations, campaigning inside the polling stations themselves. Sigh.

As I said, whatever the result I'm not sure this is going to be pretty.
