Scholarships

Does anyone know of any college scholarships available specifically for (i.e applicants are limited to) the children of British expats?

Depends on the college, your status in the US and how long you've lived in the state, but most would have to be private work based, BoA has one, that's utterly crap, MBNA before they merged had a much better one.

Welcome to BE though.

There is a book available that lists a huge number of scholarships and places them in catagories to help with certain groups and issues (female, ethnic group, academic area etc). Your local library should have a copy. If not, your local community college or state college will definitely have a copy for you to look at (you normally can't take it out - you have to look at it there so take pen and paper to write addresses down).

When applying for scholarships, the shotgun approach is usually a lot more effective than the sniper rifle, so while I'd go for any UK expat scholarships you could find, I'd also consider applying for darn near anything else you might remotely be qualified for.

You may also want to look in the UK to see if there are any 'study abroad' scholarships that might be offered from there.

I know my local state college gives you a scholarship if you are white... (since you are a minority at a predominantly black school)

Off the top of my head, Fulbright comes to mind here. Highly competitive and usually only for a year or two but worth a go. Also, I would add that if the applicant is that good, I would have thought that the college itself will extend scholarships even if the applicant is not a citizen. Remember that girl from the UK who got rejected from Oxbridge and then got a free ride to Harvard?

erasmus do something like that, but it's an exchange program, most them tend to be, and would cover a year at the most, so probably not much use here.

Let me add that I am not looking for criticism of the American education system.

If there is no such scholarship... should we ask ourselves "why not?"

and the answer would be, people don't care...that leaves loooking for private worked based stuff, or trying as many general ones as you can get.
