Satellite TV on PC
We're looking into perhaps getting the Slingbox and wondered if any of you have this gadget? If so, would you recommend splashing out around $180 for it? Or has anyone downloaded software to view satellite tv on your pc (they're being sold on eBay) or is that a total waste of money too?

Re: Satellite TV on PC
Not much help, but you might be able to dig it up if you searched, but there was a thread sometime last year about it, some people asking about it and the like...
and yeah, there's software, but on your puter, tbh, it ain't worth the hassle or effort unless your using your puter as a media box as a glorified tivo. |

Re: Satellite TV on PC
I was looking into getting one of them.
For what I could work out they are ok to watch streamed TV but doesn't have the best quality. You can't record on them (at least when I was looking) and you can only watch what's on live tv so take into consideration the hours difference if you're thinking about the UK. I decided against it in the end and left my PC behind with a tv card, GBPVR (works in the US too - http://www.gbpvr.com for tivo software for free) and "remotely anywhere" so I can get into my pc from over here :) Hope that's of some help |

Re: Satellite TV on PC
mate of mine back in the UK has one. I've had a play with it remotely over here. Good on a real fat broadband connection. Picture quality was OK (not amazing, but watchable). Biggest drawback we found was that only one user could be remotely attached to it, and he got a bit peeved when i started changing his channels from over here :D
I've been tempted, but we already have Tivo, so for now it can wait. From the research me mate did the US slingbox isn't as good as the european model (although I don't know exactly what the differences are) |
Re: Satellite TV on PC
Probably not the right thread (and it's my first post here as well). But I have been watching all the World Cup games (BBC/ITV) coverage via http://www.freelivefooty.com
Costs 2 quid a month via Paypal (also I think you can pay US dollars as well) Takes a bit to setup (download codecs etc) but it is definately worth it! I also watched a hell of a lot of Premiership/European games during the last season |

Re: Satellite TV on PC
a friend Just got location free TV from Sony - you can control and play your sky box using PSP or Laptop - and quality is superb. I am going to set my PSP up with it next trip home so i can watch Sky over here. Apparently this is much better than slingbox?
