But - the two little blue buttons on either side of the karma button. The right hand one, "!", I believe is to flag a bad post. But what is the one to the left of karma?

Yeah, pretty much. It's just a bit pointless as the folks with a lot of karma just fill up a newbies lot right off and the stars get fully loaded pretty quickly too.

My downfall is issuing Karma is that I often forget who I recently gave Karma to, and I get the notice that says "You must spread karma around before you can give this person more karma" or something like that!

Guess I don't spread myself around enough! LOL

I'm confused about something too, hoping someone can clear it up for me.

I understand that I read a thread the title no longer shows as bold (unless a new reply has been added (?)), however, when I click on to the next page of that forum part (for example page two of The Trailer Park) none of the threads are in bold - even though I haven't read them, why is this?
