but the SNP has an antipathy to fossil fuels that means it really isn't going to commit to trying to get to that.

Where is the money in decommissioning? Sounds a bit like recycling.

I'd expect the SNP to fracture and disintegrate if they ever win an independence referendum - there's just too many different factions and ideologies for it to hold together once they achieve their primary aim, and even if they don't they will never get the Greens on board with extracting more fossil fuels from the ground.

Putting aside oil for a moment, Scotland has fantastic potential for renewable energy generation from wind turbines - even Donald Trump knows this, since he's repeatedly sued the Scottish Government and lost over it!

There's an estimated 59Bn quid bill to decommission the North Sea - there's a significant amount of money to be made.

You can even do a Master's degree in it now: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/postgra...commissioning/

Is this money sitting somewhere waiting to be spent?

Good question.

I'm sure the operators voluntarily set the money aside to meet their obligations, since large oil companies would never be so callous as to let the bill fall on the UK taxpayer.

Successive UK Governments would definitely not let something like that happen, especially as there would be no political advantages whatsoever in doing nothing now and leaving it for a future generation to deal with...

Especially after they so nicely gave the UK Govt billions in taxes for all those years.
