Default The real question is surely, why would you want to?

I found this today on the BBC and was wondering who among you try to hide the fact that you are not a local?

sorry not getting your question or your thinking. Isn't this about whether you can do accents for TV/movies etc?

I usually speak slower and use the local accent for a couple of sentences. I can usually get away with it but if I have to have a longer conversation they usually figure me out.

I only ever do that when I am not in the mood to do the whole where I come from explanation when speaking to new people.

I have to do that whenever I go to West Bromwich - and it's only 5 miles away

I would not even attempt it

Avoiding situations where I might have to ask for raspberries is about as far as I'll go...

Exactly, obviously the "correct" way to ape American is to invoke god and church at every opportunity.

Just thinking if anyone uses local dialect to hide their accent in order to fit in.

I'm sure that the American "twang" occurs naturally over time anyway, but I'm equally as sure that some people have tried to sound American to avoid the much talked about "what a cute accent you have..." comments

au contraire mon frere, I just thought that a more succinct answer than to say "you are barking up the wrong tree."

I do... 'cause I don't like to ask for directions.

I pretend to figure it out and be able to read a map... that's how I got into this mess in the first place!!

Like sime, I sometimes do on the odd word to just save the "where are you from" conversation if I'm doing something as quick as ordering fast food or asking directions.

Not unknown for me to say ranch dressing rather that rarrrnch dressing, tomayto rather than tomatoe, etc.

If it's people I know I'm going to be talking to for more than a few mins, I don't bother.
