sorry not getting your question or your thinking. Isn't this about whether you can do accents for TV/movies etc?

I found this today on the BBC and was wondering who among you try to hide the fact that you are not a local?
I only ever do that when I am not in the mood to do the whole where I come from explanation when speaking to new people.

Avoiding situations where I might have to ask for raspberries is about as far as I'll go...

I usually speak slower and use the local accent for a couple of sentences. I can usually get away with it but if I have to have a longer conversation they usually figure me out.

I'm sure that the American "twang" occurs naturally over time anyway, but I'm equally as sure that some people have tried to sound American to avoid the much talked about "what a cute accent you have..." comments

That's easy to do in my area. I can simply say "sorry, No english"

Not unknown for me to say ranch dressing rather that rarrrnch dressing, tomayto rather than tomatoe, etc.
If it's people I know I'm going to be talking to for more than a few mins, I don't bother.
