Safe trip - you've managed to miss a month of heatwaves and are arriving just in time for thunderstorms and hail

What did people DO before chip shops and mushy peas in a can? Because I want the recipes!

You need "dried marrowfat peas". The bicarb in the soak makes them go mushy. Don't add salt when soaking pulses as it tends to make them tough.

Made some last week to go with a pie from www.englishporkpiecompany.com

Came out really great. Its not exactly rocket science to soak peas though.

Don't forget the curry sauce on fish and chips. Enjoy the trip.

Just back from three weeks in London, Paris and the tranquil Highlands. Ate my way around Sainsbury's and Tesco's.
Heatwave, humidity and no AC was a killer but after 14 years in California I am so homesick and can't wait to move back.

(Anyone any experience of getting good black pudding here?)

We were in an Irish pub the other night and one of the flatbread pizza toppings was black pudding and brussel sprouts.....interesting combo, but the steak and guiness pie won out.....

That sounds not too bad...we've started putting some blue cheese crumbles on our home made pizza...gives it some zing and richness.

I've never tried the curry sauce on the fish, only the chips. Might have to try that when I move over in a month~ish.

I'm probably going to get hate mail for admitting this, but I was never a fan of chips and curry sauce unless it was from the Chinese takeaway....:scarper:

Edit to add....if you have a Buffalo Wild Wings near you, their Thai curry flavor is a spot on substitute for chip shop curry sauce!
