Pumpkin Pie
Anyone know where you can buy Pumpkin Pie in London? Partridges in South Kensington want £20 for an 8 inch pie! If I can't find a cheaper ready made one I'm going to try and make one, I'm not paying that much! Lol.

Actually there was quite a lot of American food probably getting ready for Christmas. :) |
Re: Pumpkin Pie
Just make one....it's easy. FYI sweet potato pie is a good substitute

It's for Thanksgiving, which is in November. That's actually one US tradition I'm going to take home with me. I think every country should have a Thanksgiving day. It's a great way to remember how lucky you are and reconnect with family.

Re: Pumpkin Pie
Ive never had a bought one anywhere near as good as a home made one, and they are a piece of piss to make really.
2 tips. Use lard for the pastry, and you dont need a pumpkin, butternut squash is as good if not better. |
Re: Pumpkin Pie
Well I got canned pumpkin from Partridges at lunchtime but they are out of the cases. Think I will look for a sweet pastry case in Sainsburys, rather than try to make my own pastry, I haven't even got a rolling pin! As for lard, is that veggie? (I'm a veggie 26+ years).

Re: Pumpkin Pie
If you have a glass booze bottle, you have a rolling pin;)
No lard isnt veggie:rolleyes: But if you want decent pastry some things are worth sacrificing:lol: Tip three (should have mentioned it before), dont expect too much of canned pumpkin puree... <wanders off muttering incoherently about canned pumpkin and bought pastry cases> |
Re: Pumpkin Pie
I'm a veggie too and wouldn't eat lard if you paid me (ooh yummy - the fat off corpses!!), but you can make good pastry without it, so don't worry. Just replace the lard in the recipe with more butter or Smart Balance. Or google 'vegetarian short crust pastry' for recipes.
Pumpkin pie is yummy - especially with vanilla ice cream. |
Re: Pumpkin Pie
For the record I used to be a vegetarian.
Wifes 1st pregnancy and bacon (especially bacon) were my undoing. |
Re: Pumpkin Pie
I've seen a recipe for pumpkin pizza if anyone is interested.

Re: Pumpkin Pie
You can get frozen pastry sheets, just cut into shape of your dish. Making a pie from a hollowed out pumpkin is good fun at Halloween. Once you've got the pumpkin flesh it's pretty easy to mix up into the pie filling & just bake. You feel will like a domestic goddess!

Do you know that there is a UK branch of Wholefoods on Kensington High Street? I popped in there a few weeks ago (it has 3 levels and includes a restaurant, the place is huge) ....I bet they have pumpkin pies!

Re: Pumpkin Pie
Doesn't the UK Costco have them, they make the best ones, 12 inch pie very cheap.
I hated the taste when I first got here, now I love it. |
