President Deval Patrick the new Barack Obama?

I really like this guy a lot because he was Barack Obama before Obama became president. Very progressive with just enough pragmatic instincts to run government in the best interest of the people. He remains one of the most popular Massachusetts governors and might be the best person to put together the Obama coalition which is hard to beat. I just don't think Bernie Sanders can win because America is not a left wing voting country. We are more a moderate left to conservative nation. A socialist can't win the White House.

Question is will Deval getting into the race late stop him from gaining momentum?

Deval Patrick has real star power just like Obama but is it too late in the race.

Deval Patrick is a Wall Street insider. Yes, he was a good governor. His wife really isn’t up for the presidential run. No, he’s going nowhere.

Now, if we’re talking MA governors, there’s Bill Weld ...

I think this may do better in the US Trailer Park so I shall move it there.

Nothing wrong with it being in TIO but it isn't really TIO material, at least not at the moment, and it is more about a candidate for the USA forthcoming election.

In what world is Deval Patrick the "new Obama"? Patrick has been around forever. He's an accomplished person but he's not the rising star that Obama was in 2008.

If anybody is the "new Obama" it's Buttigieg.

You can all shit your pants about why Buttigieg shouldn't/couldn't/wouldn't ever be POTUS but he has more of the comparable qualities --- Youthful, relatively inexperienced in politics but yet possessing impressive resumes, cute but not too perfect, politically moderate but yet much more socially progressive than Republicans, charming and capable of having normal conversations while selling himself.

If I were to be nostalgic for any democrat President it would be Bill Clinton. Far better times.

To expand this a little into an actual discussion rather than a quick political post-it note shoot-out ( which I am getting a bit weary of having to read everywhere at the moment ), could you please explain further on your reasons for writing the above.

It doesn't need to be your personal viewpoint or thought at all. Just how you see the overall or wider picture as it were.

In saying this, let's all perhaps step away from the rhetorical damning for a change and maybe examine the prospective candidate , or even candidates. :fingerscrossed:

What does this person actually stand for. The policies. What could this person do to understand the electorate more then so they feel he would be their voice?

You want faith in the voice you elect into power BUT that voice should also be a voice of substance and integrity. Not a vacuous show to gain a place on the so-called power mat.

What is this candidate lacking for some or maybe most of the electorate then.

HE;s already missed the filing deadline for a bunch of states, has no obvious route to the nomination, and is trying to raise money in an already crowded field. My question is why he choose to get into it now when he clearly has no chance - because he seems like a guy that doesn't need his name in lights.

The raising money thing is a big question. I’ve got money to spend in this election, but I don’t feel like distributing any yet since it might be just disappearing down the drain.

For instance my congressperson is the appalling Elise Stefanik. Her putative Democratic challenger is begging for money. I know her! She’s an old friend etc! But I don’t feel like shelling out, there may be a competitive primary, there may be a stronger candidate. I’d rather wait till closer to the general election.

I’ve only given one candidate money so far in this election. Bill Weld. First, I like & respect him, second, he could (conceivably) cause President Trump some grief.

Just curious why you would think that the country would want or needs another "do nothing" Obama as president.

Well for a start UK Winds described Patrick as being Obama even before Obama. Obama was not a particularly outstanding President during his eight years. I gave him high marks for working to pass the ACA except that the ACA had flaws in it from the beginning and these flaws were exploited by Trump later on in 2016. One of the reasons that Hillary lost was that many saw her as a continuation of Obama which suggests to me that there were too many voters in the country who felt disenfranchised during his term and again Trump was able to exploit this undercurrent of discontent.

Mayor Pete comes across as a likeable person but his weakness is that he cannot or has so far failed to attract enough black voters which any Democrat candidate knows is essential to winning the nomination. The majority of black voters seem to have hitched their wagon to Biden.

I've already given my opinion enough times on Sanders and Warren. It seems though that Joe Biden has not risen to expectations which is why he's not way ahead of Warren. But in reality he really should be. Then there's Bloomberg but do billionaires appeal to the average Democrat voter? Anyway if I were a Democrat which I'm not I would place my faith in Biden. He seems to be the best in a field of otherwise non entities or in the case of Buttigieg not able to get the necessary ethnic vote.

I think one of Biden strengths is that he's liked on Capitol hill not only by Democrats but also by many Republicans and as a VP he was closer to Obama that most VPs were to other Presidents so has a good up front knowledge of the workings of the Presidency

But Leslie, we are talking about conservative middle America which decides most presidential elections. Can a gay candidate that has only accomplished being mayor of a small city become president of the United States? I don't see it possible yet. And Mayor Pete has not caught on with the main voting blocks in the democrat party.

civilservant Nov 18th 2019 10:51 am

Re: President Deval Patrick the new Barack Obama?

Conservative Middle America is exactly where Mayor Pete hails from - the fact is that the center of American politics (and this includes a good portion is Conservatives) are more social liberal and more financially conservative. This is exactly where Pete sits on the traditional L-R scale.

Is it still a long shot? Yes I guess it is, but it's far more possible then it was even 6 months ago. He's as moderate as Biden, but does not hold all the baggage that Biden does. If he get the nomination, he will become President. Can he win the nomination? Who knows.

What I do know is that if he wins Iowa, places 2nd or 3rd in NH, then he will carry real momentum into the south and the Africa-America vote will maybe get on board as Biden falters. It's not like they're going to vote for Trump.

I, for one, am ready to move past the boomers and move a person of my generation into the White House. Someone who actually has some skin in the game when it comes to climate change.

Whilst it may be nice to have someone youthful and baggage free, it’s going to be Biden or Warren going up against Trump, most likely the former.

Then I would hope it would be Biden. I won't vote for inevitable trainwreck that is M4A.
